I don't know the answer to why AIDS gets so much more attention and funding and political capital than far more virulent and easily communicable diseases.

The diseases I mentioned were mesothelioma, lung cancer, and heart disease. Which of those, exactly, is far more virulent and easily communicable than HIV/AIDS?

None. However, the diseases on your list aren’t the only ones in need of attention. HIV isn’t particularly virulent either. Which is which it requires fluid transfer to spread. People don’t spread it by sneezing in public.
