The two-decade search for an AIDS vaccine is in crisis after two field tests of the most promising contender not only did not protect people from the virus but may actually have put them at increased risk of becoming infected, The Washington Post reported.
Experts are questioning the overall strategy and scientific premises of the nearly $500 million in AIDS vaccine research funded annually by the government after the two field tests were halted last September and seven other trials of AIDS vaccines have either been stopped or put off indefinitely.
The recently closed studies, STEP and Phambili, were halted when it became clear the STEP study was futile and possibly harmful.

No, no and no. I'm comparing world heart disease deaths to world AIDS deaths. The figures I cited came from a quick google search. I've since updated them with the latest available figures. Ignatz's claim was baloney -- made up -- balderdash.
Why? I don't live in the US, and not one of my comments has been directed at the issue of HIV/AIDS in the US. I've never claimed that HIV/AIDS was a leading public health issue in the US. Nor did Ignatz anywhere indicate that his comment was only meant to apply to the US. His claim was wrong, and one would hope that you and he would have the integrity to admit your mistake.
When I have made inaccurate claims (citing out date stats) I have corrected myself. You folks haven't.

According to this article, they cut their estimation by more than 40%.

You don’t live in the US, you don’t have any concern about US heart disease / HIV figures, which is what Ignatz was posting about, you lie consistently, and when questioned, you do not answer, you simply twist more figures.
Give us one good reason why any FReeper should care what you have to post about, if you can, since you are so unreliable. And tell us who pays you to spread this propaganda.
Worlwide, according to WHO estimates, about 7 million people died of heart disease in 2002, the last year for which data is available.
There are over 6 billion people in the world. And worldwide, in 2002, only 7 million died of heart disease? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHHA.
Sorry, I ... er ... don't believe you.
Yes, in one year. I cited the World Health Organization as a source. What's your source?
No it wasn't. It's accurate for the US. You're the one who has to check and re-check his numbers, who doesn't bother to make sure they're accurate before posting, and who then tries to make yourself into a victim.
Source?
Also, I'm still waiting on your counterpoint to the WHO figures... waiting... waiting...
Cardiovascular disease: prevention and control Facts CVD made up 16.7 million, or 29.2% of total global deaths according to World Health Report 2003.

For all the religious people on this site, this is a remarkably unchristian attitude. If there were a such a thing as Hell, you'd definitely be on your way there...by the way, have a happy Easter tomorrow.
See post 290.
Surprise! I'm a sinner! And you're a jerk.
Apparently, AK can’t even get his (admittedly flexible and questionable) WHO numbers right.
Thanks...I try, especially when people recommend that people with illnesses they don't like should be sent off to an island to die.
Well, I would save the innocent babies. Other than that? Gay men? If they don’t care about their health, why should I? Why should I subsidize their lifestyle and medical treatment? Why should ANY American feel s/he has to pay for the HIV treatment of, say, an African Yassir Arafat? Why should bug chasers and bathhouse buddies expect a sinecure and free medical?
Innocent babies—yes. All others? Questionable.
That’s not what you said before - if a person can pay for their own treatment according to what you said, they’d still be shipped off. In any event, what about people who suffer from heart disease, lung cancer or diabetes brought on by poor life choices, same island or a different one?
Well, we didn’t have insurance when my husband got sick and died, so we paid for it ourselves.
Now, would you like to continue to monopolize the thread with your castigation of me? Just a suggestion: get back on topic.
I’ll play moderator and say both of you take a rest from it.
I’m not monopolizing anything...just responding to what you wrote...feel free to revise and extend your remarks if you think what you wrote was not what you meant.
to steve86: Given that this thread has a bunch of people essentially celebrating the failure of a medical advance that could have saved the lives of millions, why should I cool it?
