Calif. woman slain while calling 911

WEST COVINA, Calif. - A woman made a 911 call from her suburban mansion to report an attempted break-in, but her pleas were interrupted by gunshots, then silence: She had been shot to death.

The woman told the dispatcher late Wednesday morning that someone was trying to break into her home in upscale West Covina, Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Dan Rosenberg said.

"Deputies heard gunshots followed by silence and an open phone line," he said.

Investigators combed the neighborhood Thursday outside the three-story house with a tennis court, pool and four-car garage. Investigators examined the opening mechanism of the driveway's black iron gates, and later a repairman worked on the gates.

The victim was identified as Hsiao Hsu, 45, said Sheriff's Department spokesman Ed Hernandez.

Sheriff's deputies responding to the call entered the home and found the victim. She was pronounced dead at the scene. One or more males were reported seen running away from the house, the Sheriff's Department said.

The San Gabriel Valley Tribune carried a report describing a man who came to the scene about an hour after the shooting and asked deputies, "Is my wife OK? Did you find the guy?"

The man collapsed and cried out, "No! No! No! She just called me, you lie," the newspaper said. A patrol car drove the man away.

A KABC-TV report showed an investigator in the neighborhood examining what appeared to be a handgun under a shrub.

The house is east of Los Angeles in an unincorporated area where many homes stand well back from roads, with tall hedges and gates. Horses stood quietly in a corral at one neighborhood home Thursday.

A neighbor said a couple recently occupied the home, described on real estate Web sites as being nearly 6,000 square feet and having recently sold for more than $2 million.

"They moved in only about six months ago. I've only seen them drive in and out," said Ronald Wheeler, 57, who lives across the street.

Irene and Jesus Marquez, who live nearby, said the family has two children.

"They were really nice, good people," said Irene Marquez.

The story indicates she called in and stated someone was trying to break into her home, she actually did the correct thing, and called for backup, since she was apparently alone. It's too bad she didn't have a weapon for use when the bad guys actually entered...

I am not going to mock the woman for not having a loaded gun within reach. Her choice. Not everyone is comfortable with firearms, and they take their chances.

But it was the pistol thrown into the shrubbery that got my attention. Why do such a thing?

The bad guy knew she was on the phone...He probably tossed the gun, so if stopped fleeing, he would not have the murder weapon, or any weapon on him. Then again he could have accidentally dropped while fleeing. If he was not wearing gloves, expect to see his photo soon from prints, or from the video security.

I would suspect this guy will be in custody soon either way.

(Get a gun.) Are they allowed to in California?

Uh, there are over 2.5 million registered handguns with the state Department of Justice..This does not include long guns, shot guns and assorted other firearms privately owned by Californians, or unregistered handguns. California has more privately owned firearms than any state in the country or any other country in the free world.

Any other questions?

You don't have to get snotty.

I don't live in California.

I don't even live in the U.S. right now.

And, although it may come as a big surprise, I don't spend a lot of time trying to learn everything I can about California.

I asked an honest question.

I got a snippy answer. There are probably many things I know a lot more about than you do, but I don't use that as an excuse to be a snot.

Must suck to be you. Sorry about your insecurity.

A friend of mine was awoken by his wife who told him “You left your car door open.” He grabbed his gun and said “No I didn't” and went downstairs.

Seeing legs sticking out of the open car door he chambered a round in his pistol. The stereo thief almost wet his pants!

My buddies wife called the police while my friend made the perp assume the position (on knees, facing away, hands laced behind the head). Unfortunately his wife didn't make clear to the Police that...

a) It was her husband who had the gun
b) the situation was completely under control
c) No need to shoot/arrest/or forcibly disarm her husband.

Luckily the cops were fairly understanding of the situation once they got there, but told his wife to please make the situation clearer next time. They told him “OK put down the gun Wyatt”.

No, you asked an ignorant question, that you probably no doubt knew the answer to, and in return you received a straight forward answer.

Don't be so thin skinned save the phony responses for those that buy it. No sale here.

It wasn't an ignorant question, Mr. Paranoia. And at least I'm not afraid to ask.

You just have issues. You should replace your issues with manners.

With all the extreme leftists you have holding various offices in California, it's not a stretch to wonder if the guns laws are similar to those of DC.

Do they allow the peasants to own guns in California?

I don't live in California. I don't spend a lot of time trying to learn everything I can about California.

First you allege you know little about the state after asking if Californians are allowed to own guns, and then you make this statement below:

With all the extreme leftists you have holding various offices in California, it's not a stretch to wonder if the guns laws are similar to those of DC.

Your responses are conflicting, deceptive, and inconsistent, and basically proves my point in post #67.

Again, save your less than legitimate, inconsistent responses to those that buy it. No sale here.

You're just paranoid and weird. Besides, someone just tipped me off as to why you came off all snotty (unprovoked.). Yes, I still think Ron Paul is a moonbat.

Everybody knows about Dianne Feinstein, Barbara Boxer and well...just about anybody who holds public office in San Francisco and L.A. Everybody knows that California always votes to the left in the general election.

As for all of the specific laws....I have my own state, thank you. I don't need to learn the laws of other people's states just in case I might have a chance conversation with some instigator who's disgruntled because he lost at the physical lottery.

So, save your agenda-driven nastiness for someone who buys it. No sale here. (Good grief, that's lame...I felt sort of moonbatty for a second there even having to type that...)

I call BS. Couldn’t have happened, must be an urban legend. Calling 911 makes you impervious to being harmed and scares the bad guys away, don’t you know that?

Wait, she must have had her gun taken away from her and used on her. That has to be it.

And your responses are juvenile in nature, not to mention deceptive and inconsistant. Ron Paul? lol

Try kicking up some more dust in an effort to fog over and distract from the last few revealing exchanges. Who knows, you might even fool someone.

Actually, my responses only appear that way to you because in actuality, I am laughing at you and you are too dim to recognize that.

I can always use a good laugh. And it's great when I don't even have to go snoop over at DU to get one.

Oh...one little tip. When you're puffing up your little chest and trying to be all pompous and all (it really is kind of cute), it comes across a little better if you know how to spell.

It's "inconsistent."

You can thank me later.

Now you're stooping to spelling police tactics? Yes, I type 60 words a minute and occasionally misspell words. lol

But it does not change the fact that your responses are juvenile, less than legitimate, and clearly display a patten of inconsistencies.

But I'll give you a D for your continued effort to smoke over and distract from your less than legitimate, inconsistent, juvenile responses. Your outa of your league here and I've wasted enough time with you.

...less than legitimate, inconsistent, juvenile responses...

Very GOOD! You've learned something today. Now, you still need to keep applying yourself. Your outa of your league here... See, you want to use "you're" there. It's a contraction for "you are." "Your" denotes possession.

And remember...next time you want to get snippy and arrogant at someone who has not provoked it, they just might make an ass of you. You must beware your intellectual superiors and not walk into such a situation again. Otherwise, you might post something really imbecilic like....well, take Post #75 for example.

Happy Easter and keep working on that spelling and grammar. You're improving!

Lets straight the record straight..My original response to you, that clearly caused you to go into a tantrum, with near hysterical, accusatory responses.

Lets examine my original post to you below, shall we?.. lol

And your using lame attempts at insults like "Missy" is not disingenuous? You just showed your ass. You feel inferior to me. As well you should, I guess.

Go back to school little boy, and talk to me when you've grown up.

In the meantime, I'm done with you, troll.
