Did he do it?
That was the question my friend, herself an old friend of Barack and Michelle Obama, asked me in the wake of the Illinois Senator’s powerful and eloquent speech on race this this week.
Did he put the issue of race to rest?
The short answer is no. I know many Obama supporters who were deeply troubled by what they’ve been reading and seeing of the rants of his former pastor. It’s ugly stuff. Obama did what he had to do to reassure those folks, the people who started as his supporters and wanted to be reassured that supporting Obama didn’t mean supporting the divisive message of his former pastor.
Don’t ask them if they’d feel the same way about a white candidate who compared his grandmother to a member of the Klu Klux Klan. That’s not how they see it. What the critics are saying, sometimes out loud but also in quiet whispers, is that they don’t understand how a man who gives speeches about moving past the racial divide would choose a racist minister to be a member of his family, about why, with all the churches in Chicago, Obama not only picked this one but remained true to it, about how he could not have known what others knew, could not have heard what others did.

I never thought I would live to see the day that Susan Estrich and I would be on the same page!And I never thought I'd see the day when Hillary Clinton actually looks good IN COMPARISON TO SOMEONE ELSE.

On the dem side, Hillary is definitely the lesser of 2 evils.
In the general election, McCain is definitely the lesser of 2 evils (no matter which dem he runs against).

I think the truth is Obama’s a con artist who thought he could fool all the people all of the time and is now discovering that Lincoln was right - you can’t.

The little watched dynamic here that most people are missing is the ever widening split between Hillary supporters (Estrish) and Obama supporters (JF KERRY< ETC). On the Daily Kos the Clinton supporters are boycotting because of the vitriol being heaved at them by Obama supporters. This fracture will not be easy to patch up before the Nov. election. Obama is cratering in the polls (as he should), but if the super delegates give Hillary the nomination, the black vote will stay home or actually vote for McCain out of spite for Hillary. If obama gets the nomination, you can kiss the senior citizen vote good bye. The old folks have no tolerance for racists like Wright, and Obama has lost all cred with them.

Obama is the son of an atheist mother and a drunken Muslim father, and now it is showing that he had no upbringing.
It is easy for him to stand with an evil man like Jeremiah Wright.
Good. Keep the discussion up as long as possible. More and more people will see what a racist he is.
That's about the only thing I can disagree with her on.
He's trying to pretend he is doing it, while maintaining and hiding his and Michelle's true feelings (which run along the lines of those of Revrun Wright).
