If this is an accurate quotation, then Obama’s white grandmother fears anyone she doesn't know, whether white or black. Perhaps her fear is not motivated by racial antipathy at all, but more a reflection of the vulnerability she feels due to age and infirmity?

I agree, however, I don’t think age even matters. If I’m by myself in a parking garage or even on certain streets at night, I sometimes fear anyone I don’t know that may be coming my way. I don’t care what their race or even gender may be. It’s just the way things are.
