Former conservative colleagues in the House of Representatives are boosting Christopher Cox, chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission since 2005, to be Sen. John McCain's vice presidential running mate.
A White House aide under President Reagan, Cox served 16 years as a congressman from Newport Beach and was chairman of the House Republican Policy Committee. He was named as a federal appeals court judge to begin President George W. Bush's administration, but withdrew after Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer of California announced her opposition.
Former Rep. Rob Portman of Ohio, who also was a member of the House leadership before joining the Bush Cabinet, is being promoted for vice president by Washington insiders. But Cox's backers in the House argue that Portman lacks Cox's stature in the conservative movement, which they say McCain needs.

yeah but mccain...and certainly the people advising mccain... aren’t that stupid. If mccain wants to win he will have to pick someone that makes sense.
Another reason he won’t pick graham: he’s a senator and 2 senators on the same ticket doesn’t make sense no matter what views you hold.
a lot of elected republicans in SC don’t like Sanford because he doesn’t get along with them. He vetoes all of their spending bills.
Most conservatives would like Sanford. So having him as VP is a win win.
good point. and if 90% of CA doesn’t know him, 90% of conservatives haven’t heard of him either.
On the other hand, you don’t want a conservative that is too well known such as Newt. You want someone who was properly vetted and re-elected in his own state.
Conservatives are generally much more informed than the average voter.

conservatives may have heard of him based on his policy positions and speeches but he hasn’t been fully vetted and tested as an electable candidate on at least a state-wide level.
But hey, look on the bright side: Maybe the imam they assign you will be in favor of tax cuts.
Uh...he’s been consistent in his efforts to toughen up the naked short-selling regulations, and taken it on the chin from the funds for being “anti-free market” because of it. Of course, he’s not anti-free market at all. Just anti-fraud in the free market.
Remember, he’s only been there 3 years, and the director can’t issue edicts. He has to get a consensus...and many of the people he has to get to align are people who enacted the flawed quasi-regulations to begin with. Just last week, he finally got the lumbering bureaucracy there to do something about it. The new regulations close loopholes in his predeccor’s toothless regulations and define the practice as fraud.
The only stuff i’ve been able to google up that might have given you the impression he shut down an investigation involves the issuance of subpoenas to members of the press during the overstock.com investigation. Cox recalled the subpoenas because they were issued by the enforcement division without his knowledge or knowledge of the SEC’s general counsel. (Cox was in the hospital having surgery at the time.) He didn’t quash the subpoenas nor shut down the investigation. He put a hold on them. Wisely, I’d say. If you’re going to subpoena members of the press, you better be damn sure your ducks are in a row. He probably wanted to get his IV lines and stitches out before proceeding.
