“In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person’s becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American ... There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag ... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language ... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.”
Theodore Roosevelt 1907

Wonderful words of wisdom, unfortunately discounted by the politics of division.

What’s the source on that - I could not find that anywhere except G Gordan Liddy’s site?

I wouldn't be caught DEAD calling myself "Polish-American" or "Italian American."
Then again, I wouldn't take anything Marion Michael Morrisson said seriously either. Everything I needed to know about him I learned from "Repo Man." ;-)

Same here. I’m American. My grandparents came here legally from Italy and Ireland. And they became American citizens.
My Dad used to get so ticked off when I’d ask (as a little kid) what I was (meaning more Italian or Irish) and he’d say You’re an American and nothing else. My Mom would then tell me I was half Italian and half Irish and all American. Never hyphenated :)

You’re an American and nothing else.Note the light yellow areas on the map:

Note that in the purple areas of the South the next major ancestry is American. It seems most Americans live in the South.

Ok, you’re going to have to explain this one to me.
After a couple minutes looking at the map and thinking, maybe not.
