PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (CNN) -- Sen. Barack Obama in a speech Tuesday addressed the controversy surrounding his former minister, using it as an opportunity to challenge Americans to take a closer look at race relations.
Speaking to supporters at Philadelphia's National Constitution Center, the Democratic presidential candidate said he rejected racially charged comments made by the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, but he tried to explain the root of those remarks.
Wright formerly preached at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, where the senator from Illinois worships.
Some of Wright's old sermons came under fire after an ABC News report last week, becoming a YouTube phenomenon.
In one, Wright said America had brought the September 11 attacks upon itself. In another, he said Sen. Hillary Clinton had an advantage over Obama because she is white.
Obama on Tuesday said his belief that all people want to move in the same direction comes from his "unyielding faith in the decency and generosity of the American people. But it also comes from my own American story."
The senator said that race only became a divisive issue in the campaign during recent weeks.
Obama admitted he had sat in church and heard his former minister make controversial remarks.
"Did I strongly disagree with many of his political views? Absolutely -- just as I'm sure many of you have heard remarks from your pastors, priests or rabbis with which you strongly disagreed."

His sorry excuse for a pastor race baits and flames whites and Jews and he asks the people to help heal the racial divide! Its you and your ilk who are causing it. Its up to you to heal it, Osama.
If my pastor ever said “G-D the USA” during a sermon I would challenge him to a duel.
Hey Abomi nation,
The only racial divide is the one created by the morons you pander to. The divide will cease to exist when your joker cons end the BS and the likes of you stop pandering to it.
Sincerly,
repulsed
Sorry...I don’t have a racial divide. I give everyone the same courtesy, the same benefit of the doubt, the same level playing field.
So...don’t ask me to support tilting the playing field in favor of those who have been convinced by charlatans like Obama that their lot in life is due to influences beyond their control. I don’t buy it.
And, neither should anyone else.
So in other words, “blacks” have the same things in this country that “whites” have.
What a RACIST nation we are! /s
First he denies that he was sitting in the pew when these type comments were made....
And now he says he was there....Which way is it Obama?
...he was there before he wasn’t there. Or he wasn’t before he was. Actually, he was there singing “Fuzzy Wuzzy Was A Bear”, then he wasn’t there and sang “Fuzzy Wuzzy Had No Hair”. So the real question is...WAS FUZZY WUZZY FUZZY OR WASN’T HE?
There! Does that answer your question?
“Now he admits he did sit in the pew and listen to these hate-speeches”
He also took tapes of Wright’s speeches away with him to Harvard, so he could listen to them over and over again for inspiration!

“Will most democrats buy this nonsense?”
I’m afraid so. I don’t think that the democrats know how to be anything but traitors anymore.
My heart goes out to Obamas two beautiful little girls. They are being brainwashed week after week with vile hatred towards their own country. Those two sweeties will spend a long time on psychiatrists couches when they grow up.
...no they won’t. They’ll join the same support group that Chelsea starts. Kinda like the Betty Ford Clinic.
No. If it had not been for slavery, the blacks in this country would not exist.
You first Obama. Funny...I never see things along racial lines. And I am half lebanese. Maybe it is because I am not a black liberal. Plus I consider myself an american since I was born in the USA. Southern by the grace of God of course.
I’m sure Obama’s kids are getting a raw deal but I’m a little more worried about the 3 little white boys that Michael Jackson owns.
On the plus side I am hoping that Elion Ganzales will one day be elected President of Cuba.
Obama’s claim to be a racial healer might have a little more credibility if he would have stood up at the time and denounced the comments from Wright.
What about the rest of the congregation who were jumping up and down and applauding Wright’s comments? Barry now claims that he recognized it was BS but certainly not all of his fellow church members did and how did putting that crap in their heads do anything to heal any racial divide?
LMAO!! Makes perfect sense to me.

And this is news to whom, exactly?
The Kool-Aid crowd will deny it as if it never happened. The rest of us already knew.
No, B Hussein O. It became an issue when that "spiritual advisor" of yours spewed his hate for "white America" from your church's pulpit. You and yo preacher brung up this issue, boy.
And now he says he was there....Which way is it Obama?
One of those "I wasn't there before I was there" moments. Another flip flopper.
