LIVE THREAD - Under Pressure, Obama Prepares for Race and Unity Speech

Barack Obama is preparing to deliver a major address Tuesday on race, politics and unifying the country after being hounded by questions about his relationship to a pastor whose sermons have been laced with anti-American invective.
In a speech whose religious significance could compare to one given in December by former GOP presidential hopeful and Mormon Mitt Romney, Obama may be forced to explain the philosophy of the 8,000-strong Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, where the Democratic presidential candidate has been a congregant for 20 years.
In announcing the morning address, to be delivered in Philadelphia, Obama would not say specifically what he will discuss, but suggested he wants to cool down the atmosphere after incendiary remarks by his pastor, retired Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., blanketed the airwaves over the past week.

I’ve had enough. Obama is going to run this out as long as the camera and microphone are in front of him.

He’s going to make me puke, with “it’s a small world after all” portrayals of America.
What makes America great is the fact that we are made up of INDIVIDUALS that don’t need to become a collective to make this society work.

"Obama is NOT the descendent of slaves.?"
"MAJOR CATCH!!!!
He?s the descendent of people who who SOLD SLAVES to the whites!!!!"

I am astounded that I just got here, read a hundred posts and all I read was distortion of what he is saying.
He will win the nom and he will not be easy to beat.
He has buried Hillary with this speech.

Good grief. He just keeps going on and on. Great speaker, though. You have to give him credit for that. But yes, white guilt. White guilt. White guilt. It’s all our fault ! The poor black people are being held back, there’s not enough $$$$$ being given to their cause. Omigod: the schools! the children! healthcare vs. special interests in Washington! I’m gonna be sick. And here comes the Iraq issue. And he thinks he’s gonna fix it. Oh Lord. They ALL think they’re gonna fix it. And then reality sets in once they get into the White House. And the lights go on. And THEY they really see the truth.....

The undercurrent in this speech supports what Wright has been preaching.
@@@@@@
This is exactly why he could say that he never heard the comments that so upset White America. He has lived almost half of his life with this congregation and community - longer than he ever lived anyplace before.

I could give this guy a pass on his reverend except for this. I want retribution for Trent Lott, Don Imus and many others that have fallen from the faux outrage of racism. Screams from the DNC that Bush going to Bob Jones U indicates that he is a racist don't fly with me. Bush didn't sit in the pews at BJU every Sunday for 20 years. George and Laura were not married by Bob Jones and Barbara & Jenna Bush were not baptized by Bob Jones. President Bush never said that Bob Jones was his spiritual advisor either.
Trent Lott didn't say "God Damn America!" Trent Lott didn't say "Blackie created syphilis to destroy the white man." Trent didn't yell to the rafters that 911 was caused by the United States government. All he did was glorify a 100 year old man that ran for POTUS in the late 40's and lost. Yet he was labeled a racist.
I refuse to let this subject die. Democrats invented this "bigotry" crap and now they have to live with it. It's a shame too, because I may not like Obama's policies, he's way too liberal for my taste, but I still enjoyed the fact that he showed all the race baiting yahoos on the left that racism is dead in America. He took the microphone right out of the hands of Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. I do fear if he falls based upon this subject, we will have fed massive antibiotics to these fore mentioned racists and they will rise from their deserved graves.

I agree that this speech has done him in. If his judgment is so awefully, awefully bad that he decided to make this kind of speech think of the damage he could do to this country with bad judgments.

Am I the only contrarian here who thinks this is a brilliant speech and is going to solve his problem? The speech is good, but I don't think the problem can be solved. There is simply no way to skin that cat.
He may win the nomination, but he will not win in November. People are going to remember "God D*** America" long after they forget this speech.

But there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice. In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
