Classic example of an image fitting the prejudice that “the Beeb” and most Europeans have against the US and our superior economic performance (even in weak quarters). The interviewed “displaced” folks sounded and looked to me like mentally ill and perhaps drug using populations - large constituents of the homeless populations at any phase of the economy.

In addition to the regular homeless folks, we have canyons in Riverside and San Diego with camps full of illegals.

Very sad. I don't know how many brought it on largely themselves (ie drugs, gambling, etc) but it is hard to imagine that there are not at least some who got sideswiped by injury, illness, death of the breadwinner, or similar. There will always be the professional homeless, and I frankly don't give a damn about them. But for the rest, I think it is entirely appropriate to direct private charitable actions towards bettering their lot and helping them "escape" their predicament.

IMO, a greater share of donations should be directed toward domestic ills instead of international charity. And if the federal government is forced by cosmic powers to waste our tax dollars to get a 10 cent return compared to a private charity dollar, I'd similarly prefer those monies to be spent on the home-front.

Give up on trying to change human nature, you cannot. Ideally, we should be able to say that anyone who is homeless is in that predicament because of their own stubbornly poor choices, and a refusal to mend their ways. I am optimistic that we could get there with voluntarily donated dollars via private charities, but we have to stop wasting resources on the truly self-destructive, and stop trying to solve problems which cannot be solved.

Sitting around our campfire, hunting as a family group, a couple of gutted out deer hanging in the trees, the Old Man said to my brothers and me: “I raised you boys rough. We’ve lived poor but we always made it. Your friends at school always had more than you did, you felt that and I felt it too. But boys, it takes guts and know how to live rough. You’ve got to be thinking and moving all the time. It’s easy to live soft. You can learn that in a minute without even trying. Anyone can live soft. Going from tough living to soft living is easy. You’ll see I’m right because some day you’ll all live soft lives. But going from soft to tough, that’s hard, real hard. Lots of folks, when they have to do that, they just curl up and try to die.” We sat there staring into the fire and listening to the ATSF locos sounding their horns miles and miles from our camp.

People can be down on their luck, I understand that. However, I have no idea what this piece by BBC is trying to accomplish. We still have jobs here.

Propaganda by the Liberals. Many of these people are professional homeless.

Travel anywhere in Cali and you will find them tucked away in the hills or especially in the southern end.

I spent three months as a youth roaming America and bumming, it was great because so many people in this great country will help you.
