A press release has been received from 8th congressional district Republican candidate Steve Greenberg calling for a Federal investigation into "Bean's work on behalf of foreign interests."
Previously, the Republican challenger caused a stir by pointing out that incumbent Melissa Bean's middle name,Luburich, was Serbian.
It was right after a Cincinnati talk radio host Bill Cunningham had used Barack Obama's middle name in introduced John McCain to a rally.
Chicago Tribune columnist Eric Zorn criticized Greenberg on March 9th. Here's what he wrote about Greenberg's use of Bean's maiden name:
Steve Greenberg, the Republican candidate in the 8th U.S. Congressional District this November, recently sent out a news release referring to his opponent, the Democratic incumbent, as 'Melissa Luburich Bean.'
Bean does not generally use 'Luburich,' her Serbian maiden name, and the Greenberg campaign was not shy about admitting that they used it to draw attention to her opposition to independence for the Serbian province of Kosovo.
Bean's spokesman Jonathan Lipman blasted Greenberg for the injection of 'ethnically and religiously divisive' rhetoric, and I saw shades of the appeal to bigotry inherent in the intonation of 'Barack Hussein Obama.'
"'Lurburich' indeed. Shame on you, Greenberg.
I sent Zorn the new press release.
Today Greenberg points out that a foreign national, Serbian Consul General to Chicago Desko Nikitovic, is hosting a $1,000 fundraiser for Bean at his home.
Although I ran for unsuccessfully for Congress in 1980, my knowledge of Federal campaign law is rudimentary. I do remember President Bill Clinton's getting into trouble for taking Chinese money. So, I assume it is illegal to accept donations from foreigners.
Whether the Serbian Consul General contributes any cash or not, he certainly seems to be making a contribution in-kind.

it will be interesting to see how this plays out on FR. On the one hand, Bean is a Democrat, and the opponent making the accusation is a Republican. OTOH, there is a strong pro-Serbian contingent here.
Elton John to Raise Money for ClintonMonday, March 17, 2008 12:08:16 PM
Elton John will help Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton raise cash for her presidential campaign with a solo concert next month at Radio City Music Hall in New York.
"I'm not a politician but I believe in the work that Hillary Clinton does," the British musician said in a statement released by the Clinton campaign Monday.
Tickets for the "Elton and Hillary: One Night Only" performance April 9 go on sale Wednesday. Prices start at $125 for mezzanine seats, $250 for seats near the orchestra. Last October, Clinton held a star-studded fundraiser to celebrate her 60th birthday.
Comedian Billy Crystal and rockers Elvis Costello and the Wallflowers headlined the event at New York's historic Beacon Theater, which raked in more than $1.5 million for Clinton's presidential bid.
Though I'll say that the Serbs are foolish to interfere in U.S. politics when it is perfectly stacked against them - especially the shadow government forces which really run things in the U.S.
The U.S. though sends money to political groups in Serbia and supports anti-Serb forces within Serbia and without - very, very, very heavily.
"'Lurburich' indeed. Shame on you, Greenberg.
What a hypocrite. By using only Greenberg's last name, is Lipman trying make people think that Greenberg is Jewish?
“OTOH, there is a strong pro-Serbian contingent here.”
Indeed there is. I wonder if Greenberg gets his money from the Mohammedans funneled though aggressive Mohammedanism’s American office at 1400 Pennsylvania Ave, from McCain’s campaign treasurer or direct from some jihadi bagman working for the RNC and the Saudi Royals?
Plenty of Democrat politicians have been funded by the Albanians. If this is true, the Serbs are just trying to play catch up.
At least Bean’s event will be taking place in the United States. During his overseas trip this week, John McCain will be holding a fundraiser in London hosted by Lord Rothschild. Is that “illegal” and “on behalf of foreign interests” as well?
Joe DioGuardi was a conservative Republican Congressman from New York in the 80’s and a staunch anti-communist. Nita Lowey beat him in 1988. Bob Dornan went to my town to campaign for DioGuardi when he tried to win back his seat in 1992.
I wasn’t thinking of Joe DioGuardi in particular, but if he got bought by the Albanians, then I’m afraid he deserved to lose. And I’m certainly not a fan of Nita Lowey, either. At the time the importance of an Albanian connection was less clear, and I supported DioGuiardi.
Actually, I was thinking mostly about Tom Lantos.

Second, it is common practice to use only the last name after first using the full name.
Second, it is common practice to use only the last name after first using the full name.
I'm well aware of that. Setting pedantics aside for a moment, that wasn't really my point.

DioGuardi is Albanian-American (I don’t know if he’s 100% Albanian) and advocated using force against Serbia throughout the 90’s. During the Cold War, many Republican politicians in New York got Albanian votes by touting their anti-communism.
We once lived in Westchester, and I voted a number of times for DioGuardi. We left NY before the race against Nita Lowey, but I certainly would have voted for him then, too.
The Albanian problem didn’t really come to the fore until Clinton started bombing Belgrade and handing over Kosovo to the Muslims. Before that, I don’t think anyone really had a dog in that fight.
