Faten Saad knew she wasn't in a typical Wal-Mart when she saw an end-of-the-aisle display featuring Mamool.
Boxes of the date-filled, whole wheat cookie from the Middle East welcomed the 21-year-old Lebanon native into the international aisle of the new Wal-Mart store in this Detroit suburb known as the capital of Arab America. Aisle 3, which also features Eastern European and Hispanic food, represents many of the 550 items geared toward Arab-American shoppers in the store that opened last week.

Watch for Aisle 3 to soon be oriented toward Mecca and outfitted with footbaths and prayer rugs - in the spirit of celebrating diversity.
Perhaps, but I don't think so. Sounds like more of a "Marketing alert" to me.
I live in the Atlanta neighborhood with that is home to the Orthodox Synagogue. The Kroger & Publix both have Kosher sections that would fit nicely in Tel Aviv.
Different market segment but same principle in action here.
Is Isle three facing Mecca? Do visitors to Isle three have to wear burkas?

Not exactly....Atlanta does not ban Jews and does not sell suicide bomb vests in aisle 3 at wholesale!!!!
Each day I consciously tweak my efforts towards mooselimbs. I consciously turn east towards what I think is Mecca and silently or not pass gas.
I wonder if Wal=mart will start selling culturally appropriate toys....like that little boy doll with simulated explosives strapped to his body?
I;m thinking of opening one of those ethnically-oriented, specialty food stores...ya know, the kind that sell Cheetos, Kellogs Corn Flakes, Bordens Ice Cream and Oscar Mayer Bacon...
Arab does not necessarily mean Muslim —> most of the Arab-Americans in America are Christians, from Maronite, Chaldean, Coptic, Catholic, Orthodox and other backgrounds. Especially note that 40% of Lebanese in Lebanon are Christian, 10% of Syrians are Christians and 2% of Iraqis were Christian (I say were, because ever since 2003, they have been continuously persecuted and most of them have fled — these being peoples like the Assyrian and Chaldean Christian Churches that have been there since Apostolic times)
You mean there will be someone to tell us that pulling our children, especially daughters, out of the way of a muslim yoot gang, is wrong?
We live in the middle of what most would consider a totally “white bread community.” It’s called the “Golden Ghetto” by some. We are however, walking distance from a Mexican grocery, a Korean grocery, two Indian groceries, a Jewish Deli, and an Indian restaurant. With very little effort we can find restaurants representing many other ethnic types. Oh, and we live inside a special area, I’m not sure what it’s called which allows the Orthodox Jews to walk on Sabbath. There’s a wire around it and everything. Any Jewish freepers know what that’s called? So we are the middle east and we all get along together just fine.
Hmmm. I think it's more like "Capitalism Alert."
Walmart did some research, and found that there was a gap between local demand and availability of products that some consumers wanted.
So they brought in another brand of cookies to make money off that demographic.
I'm surprised that this is even news-worthy, and I'm very surprised that a generally sophisticated audience like we have on FR would get so worked up over something like this. It's a pretty big leap to go from sales of date cookies to sales of dolls with bombs strapped on them.
That wire is known as an “eruv”. It’s used by Orthodox Jews to circumvent the Law of God. As if He is too stupid to recognize the flim-flam.

Watch out for falling prices!
Ha-ha. (You should have shown the sword cutting the Walmart smiley face in two.)
Has your local Walmart agreed to fix prices so it doesn’t impact the local Arab/Moslem merchants?
Has your local Walmart agreed to be subject to the oversight by a committee of religious and local community leaders. (read Imams?)
This Walmart has.
hmm, I’m good with defining a holy space for whatever purpose. I mean, the only over the top thing I see the faithful do is allow a small child to ride a tricycle. I’m reading Exodus this week and all the rules and structure preserved the people and now our rules, our Constitution preserves us.
How about a nice spiral cut ham in aisle 3. Pickled pigs feet would be nice to see and I hear they go well with whole wheat cookies from the middle east.
