Lovette in court in Duke student's killing (Judge: Media focusing because victim is white)

DURHAM - A 17-year-old charged with killing a UNC-Chapel Hill student leader and a graduate student at Duke University appeared this morning before a Durham County judge who delivered a call for anti-gang legislation.

Laurence Alvin Lovette appeared stone-faced before District Court Judge Craig Brown, who used the hearing to urge legislators to pass laws to fight gangs.

"We absolutely positively need to have anti-gang legislation passed by the General Assembly," Brown said. "I respectfully and sincerely ask the governor to call a special session of the legislature."

Authorities have not said whether Lovette was a member of a gang. There was speculation early in the investigation that a suspect in a surveillance photo was wearing a cap suggesting gang affiliation.

Lovette was in court to be officially informed of the murder and robbery charges in the shooting of Abhijit Mahato, a doctoral student at Duke. Brown set Lovette's bond at $3 million and appointed the Durham Public Defender's Office to represent him.

From the bench, Brown also chided the media, saying they were focusing on the case because one of the victims was a young, white woman. Black crime victims, he said, don't get nearly as much attention.

What a chilling and revealing thing for a judge to say. Beyond belief!

Judge Brown, the reason this case is getting a lot of attention is because this maggot from the bottom of the gene pool killed a bright, promising, well-loved coed. Yes, the maggot was black and the beautiful young woman was white.

Are you a racist, Judge Brown? You sound like one.

Nope. Not in Durham. Hardly anyone ever heard anything about the black stripper "rape victim". No sirree. No publicity at all.

an example of preaching and legislating from the bench instead of focusing on what case is in front of him

some history on the judge:

IN THE SUPREME COURT OF NORTH CAROLINA

No. 300A02

FILED: 4 OCTOBER 2002

IN RE: INQUIRY CONCERNING A JUDGE, NO. 257 CRAIG B. BROWN, Respondent

This matter is before the Court upon a recommendation by the Judicial Standards Commission, entered 23 May 2002, that respondent, Judge Craig B. Brown, a Judge of the General Court of Justice, District Court Division, Fourteenth Judicial District of the State of North Carolina, be censured for conduct prejudicial to the administration of justice that brings the judicial office into disrepute in violation of Canons 2A and 3A(1) of the North Carolina Code of Judicial Conduct. Considered in the Supreme Court 12 September 2002.

ORDER OF CENSURE

Black crime victims, he said, don't get nearly as much attention.

Why would law enforcement spend time trying to solve a crime against a black person, if others in the black community are unwilling to help the police and face some level of retribution or be ostracized? Are the police supposed to use a divining rod like they are searching for water to help them?

The Honorable Craig B. Brown was appointed to the bench in 1996 and reelected in 1998 and 2002. Judge Brown received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also received a Masters in Public Policy from Duke University. Prior to serving the District Court bench, Brown practiced privately.

Doesn’t anyone in the North Carolina government understand what a black eye the state is getting with all this crime.

Maybe it’s a plan on the part of NC to keep the yankees from moving there.

"We absolutely positively need to have anti-gang legislation passed by the General Assembly," Brown said. "I respectfully and sincerely ask the governor to call a special session of the legislature."

Your Honor, and I use the term loosely. You are a JUDGE, an officer of the court here in Durham County, North Carolina. You are NOT paid to come into your courtroom and lobby other branches of government for legislation. You are paid to preside over a court of law.

Please shut the hell up, quit grandstanding for the cameras, and DO YOUR JOB.
