NOW!!! The California Fish and Game Commission recently voted to adopt regulations intended to enforce AB821 (Nava) legislation that would limit the use of traditional Lead -cored center-fire rifle cartridges in certain areas in California for hunting and the taking of non-game animals. IMPORTANT NOTE: Although the NRA vigorously opposed AB821, it is now law. However, it is unfortunate that the CA. Fish & Game Commission would seek to expand the restrictions much farther than those required by AB821. Therefore, the NRA urges you to contact the CA. Fish & Game Commission and voice your opposition to those enhanced restrictions that exceed the scope and intent of AB821.

The State of California foolishly passed AB 821 into law banning the use of lead ammo for hunting big game in a huge chunk of the State. The Fish and Game Commission is tasked with turning that law into administrative rules. They are wildly overstepping the bounds of the law. AB 821 was written to affect centerfire rifle ammo only. The rule the F&G Commission is proposing bans lead in blackpowder, pistol, and rimfire ammo. This is beyond the scope of the law. This affects hunters not only in terms of what ammo they can carry to hunt with, but also the ammo they carry in handguns carried for self-defense.
To make matters worse, the F&G Commission is late in getting these rules out. There is a process for certifying ammo as "lead free", but it will take a small miracle to get ammo approved and on shelfs before the rule takes effect. This will hurt farmers who need this Government approved ammo to kill pests like wild pigs. (Remember last year's tainted spinach fiasco? That was caused by wild pig feces on California spinach!)
If you hunt in the State or if you plan to, you need to contact the Commission and voice your concerns. Also, if you live in one of the States bordering California, you need to get involved too. Our big, dumb, Pleistocene birds don't know Nevada from Arizona from California. If our protected buzzards get into your State, you can bet that the greenies will try something like this bullet ban in your State too.
That does it!!! I have really had it now! No more target shooting?
That’s one of the things the rules aren’t clear about. Of course, you could switch to skeet or trap and shoot lead by the ounce instead of by the grain. Apparently, that’s OK for condors. Go figure.
I reload black powder pistol and rifle cartridges, but I don’t know anyone who manufactures or reloads black powder rimfire cartridges, like the old late 19th Century .22 and .32 rimfire rounds.
I've done all my rabbit hunting with .22LR in California. A centerfire is too much power if you intend to eat the critter.
Are there any recipes for a Barnes* bullet and black powder? I doubt it. You wouldn’t be able to hunt with your ammo in the affected area.
*Barnes is the de facto sole source for “lead free” projectiles at the moment.
Even without laws like this it’s getting tempting to leave! However, we need to act now so that this law doesn’t follow anyone (ME!) out of State.
: )
This is the camel’s nose under the tent. All the trash talk about lead in paint, in kids’ toys, ROhS, etc. is leading to a total ban on lead everywhere. Including, of course, all your ammo with lead. This movement will likely be unstoppable because everybody ‘knows’ how harmful lead is.
Rabbit hunters might want to look into 22 Hornet. It's just a little hotter than 22WMR and is a reloadable centerfire. Another alternative is 5.7X28mm. Centerfire and .224 caliber bullets. A Barnes TSX FB 45, 53, 62 and 70 gr .224 caliber bullets would do nicely. The 53 gr would be fine for .223. The 45 or 53 would be fine for 22 Hornet. I would go with the 45 on the 5.7X28.
All good for .22s, but most of my guns are either real or replica 1870s-’90s style pieces that ONLY fire lead. May have to head 40 miles up the road to Nevada.
Condors have been spotted in Nevada. (And points beyond!)
Then I’ll shoot them out of the sky.
Yes, we do (I work at Nosler in Bend, Oregon) make lead-free bullets. Bullets have been EXHAUSTIVELY tested and are great. Besides the 30-180 and 30-150 “E” Tip bullets we are beginning the 270-130 “E” Tip with 7mm bullets not far behind.
My wife likes to shoot my .30 cal rifles, so I keep lots of the 100 gr "Plinker" bullets around. We shoot mostly paper targets and spinners, so premium bullets aren't a critical necessity. When I get ready to do some hunting, I'll use the good stuff. Nosler certainly does make good stuff.
A couple of questions: Have you guys at Nosler talked about whether or not you can have approved bullets on store shelves in CA by July 1st? And do you know if any manufacturers are trying to get fixed ammo on the shelves by then? Thanks!
Redcloak,
We have made several hundred thousand of the ET 30-150’s and 30-180’s. You can buy these bullets through Nosler’s on line site (www.Nosler.com) for hand-loading yourself - or if you have a friend that re-loads.
We ship to several different manufacturers. If you desire I can check to see who has orderd this product and let you know which manufacturer to contact or watch for the product in the stores.
Our engineers have done some really outstanding work on this bullet. It has taken a lot of time and effort. No short-cuts, it had to meet ridged specifications and shooting tests.
Thanks for being a customer.
