Cramer Announces Retirement
Mar 13, 2008 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (The Politico) House Republicans got a rare bit of encouraging news today when Rep. Bud Cramer (D-Ala.) announced he would be stepping down after nine terms in Congress, opening up a conservative-minded seat in northern Alabama.
I have been truly blessed to be able to serve this district in Washington, Cramer said in a statement. While I am closing my career as a member of Congress I will continue to be active in the life, growth and development of the community that I, my parents and my grandchildren will always call home.
A founder of the conservative-leaning Blue Dog Democrats, Cramer has maintained a centrist voting record during his 18 years in Congress. He has been a leading advocate for the districts sizable aerospace industry, concentrated at the Marshall Space Flight Center.
The district, centered in Huntsville, has leaned Republican in federal races, but has a history of supporting Democrats as well. It gave President Bush 60 percent of the vote in 2004, and 54 percent in 2000.
With its ancestral Democratic roots, the district never elected a Republican congressman, according to the Almanac of American Politics.
Cramer is only the seventh Democrat to announce his retirement this election cycle. The only other open, Democratic-held seat that Republicans are contesting is that of Rep. Darlene Hooley (D-Ore.), who represents a Salem, Oregon-based district.
Given the district's demographics, this will likely be one of the Republicans' top pickup opportunities.
Keep us informed about the Republican who runs for this seat. We can help support him/her.
Well, Alabama is certainly not following the way of California, so this could certainly be a GOP seat in the making! I sure hope so. The good Lord knows that we need it.
If Republicans nominate a good candidate, they will be favored to win here.
Not that anyone has announced yet, but Mo Brooks would be my strong first choice. Read about him here:

That you, Cosmo?
I’ve been called lots of things, but never Cosmo!

I second that! Keep us in the loop so that we can support conservatives whenever we are able.
Quick! Can a Republican be nominated and elected?
Referring to Cramer, of course (probably Kramer).
Mo sounds pretty good. I was a bit concerned at seeing the education from Duke Univ. They turn out a liberals. But his record looks conservative. I’ll take your word for it. I’ll get some support for him if he jumps in for that seat. My hometown you know.
This is a shock. I never dreamed he would retire. I wonder who will run for the office. I can not think of any names offhand who would be a candidate.
You are right. I never thought of him. I met him and his wife many years ago. He would make an ideal candidate.
1984: Ronald Reagan for President, Madison County Spokesman (won 63%)
Boy Scouts of America, Webelos Den Leader (1994-1996)
That's good enough for me...
Check posting #5.
For a second I thought it was Jim “the screamer” Cramer.
Two down, how many to go?
