Los Angeles (AP) -- Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is making plans to lay off city workers to help close a looming budget gap.

The mayor's office said Wednesday that the layoffs are expected to come after July 1.

The mayor's office did not say how many of the city's approximately 40,000 workers would be cut loose to help close a spending hole as big as $500 million.

Yup...better lay off those Americans. There's loads of illegals that need that money.

Reconquista, thy name is Kalifornia.

I suggest that the layoff’s begin at the very top.

True. There’s another game that municipalities play. If they eliminate the bicycle advocacy coordinator, nobody will get upset, so they leave those jobs alone, and lay off, police, fire, road crews, water and wastewater people, etc. People complain, and they start a campaign with something like, “Would you pay $5 more a year to have more firefighters on duty?”

Well, using a rough rule of thumb that one employee costs $100K in pay and benefits, 5,000 ought to do it. Don't hold your breath.

My mom has worked for the city for 27 years.... She started when she was 40 when she realized she needed the benefits etc.

She keeps pushing retirement off.

Cutting 500 workers at the very bottom of the payscale would probably close the gap and give the city a surplus.

There are lots of flipper houses and other real estate investments standing empty in those hills. Million dollar homes being stripped by copper and other thieves. Of course, if they cant make their house payments, dont even ask about their property tax payments.

My dad likes to pay his DWP bill in person, and he says they have a very large amount of non payers and shutoffs in their territory right now.

Yep, that is an Atlanta classic. Forget the gay arts coordinator making 80 a year.

Police will not be laid off under any circumstance. He’s grown the department, and it will be or has passed 10,000 oficers.

It’s his big tough on crime initiative. Too bad violent crime has increased by 30-40% while he’s been mayor, even as the number of police have been increased.

Tony Villar has plans to run for president.
