Dr. Laura: Women Share the Blame for Cheating Men. (See, it's mostly her fault).
MSNBC ^ | 3-11-08 | Mike Celezic

Dr. Laura Schlessinger has never been one to shrink from controversy, and she leaped headlong into one on Monday when she said that if a husband cheats, his wife may share some of the blame.

“When the wife does not focus in on the needs and the feelings, sexually, personally, to make him feel like a man, to make him feel like a success, to make him feel like her hero, he’s very susceptible to the charm of some other woman making him feel what he needs,” the popular psychologist and radio personality said.

More commonly known as just “Dr. Laura,” Schlessinger made the remarks while participating in one of several panel discussions on TODAY dealing with the breaking news that New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer had been connected to a high-priced prostitution ring.

I do not try to “toughen” women up, or on certain subjects, I will not be honest with a woman because they usually don’t want honesty. That’s the difference between women and men I suppose. If a man asks for your honest opinion, they really want your honest opinion. I think the hyper-sensitivity that our culture places on women does them, and those around them a disservice.

I have never asked my bride to look like a '20-something'. We are both 50, she is a size 6 now, looks just like she did in high school, and the bikini she wore then still fits. She works hard at it.

I never asked to be this way, she did it for her, and I keep encouraging her. She says "Not bad for a 50-yr-old." And I say, "Heck baby, you make a lot of 20-yr-olds jealous."

I get and give a LOT of attention for that.

Now it's my turn to knock off 30-40 pounds.

Barbra Jean and Brock in the TV show Reba.

I'm pretty sure I'm picturing the right people. To me, they're equal in weight, which is quite unusual for TV.

That you would think Barbara Jean is fatter is interesting. It seems that women 10-20 pounds overweight are considered fat, whereas men have to hit a good 30-40, even 50, pounds overweight to be called that. (And I mean "fat" adjusted for gender differences such as muscle weight and bone structure.)

TV viewers get so used to seeing wives who are considerably trimmer than their husbands that the sight of a woman who's similar in size to her husband is jarring.

The bar is set much higher for women. Odd, since women by nature are supposed to have more body fat and men by nature find it easier to lose weight.

I meant on the show. She can call her fat husband fat over and over, as long as he never reciprocates.

Oh Geez, didn’t we all just know that PE Coach, and former Nude Model “Dr” Laura would chime in on this.

Hasn’t this wretched old hag’s 15 minutes run out yet?

I don’t think it’s cultural, I really think it’s the way women are made. We are verbal creatures—— we fight with words, war, wound and destroy with words. There are men like that also—— who know just what words can break a spirit.

Words that hurt are taken as attack....you may mean it as helpful, but the suggestion will be taken as true intent to do harm-— that you really hate them and want to hurt them. It’s not that a real opinion isn’t wanted, it’s how it’s delivered that makes all the difference.

“Same for the women in your life—— if they are what they look like, if they are sensitive about their appearance, toughening them up ain’t gonna work. You’re going to have to work within the parameters of who they are.”

You are so smart. Are you a therapist?

And then there is the delightful world of fake boobs, liposuction etc all to stay ‘young’ looking so hubby doesn’t dump you for a new model.

Frankly, women mainly get fake boobs, apply makeup, and what not to impress other women, not men.

When a beautiful woman walks into a party, its the women that become fixated more than the men.

Countries where women don't shave their legs, don't apply makeup, and don't wear Prada have pretty healthy birth rates. The men are OK with what God provided. (Vermont is an obvious exclusion to the fore mentioned example). Look at all those women in Burkhas. Lift the veil and you will find beautiful clothes, perfect make-up and lovely hair. All for the purpose of socializing with other women.

Yeah, I know fake boobs always impress me.

Seriously, where did you get this?

I agree that most of what women do is for other women....but again, I see and deal with a lot of those who are afraid of getting older and no longer being attractive to men or their husbands....and there is a real panic for man.

Granted, I’ve got the Bridget Bardot attitude about it myself....which is Kiss my !ss ;) if you don’t like me getting older.

Ironically this article is about Dr. Laura's opinion that women should try harder to respond to men within their parameters. An opinion that many women on this thread find offensive. But who wants to talk about that?

You may just work with therapists but their knowledge is rubbing off on you. You are really hitting the nail on the head with some of your replies.

Because we know Dr. Laura is a fake and a bomb thrower? Sorry, but if you use Dr. behind your title in a talk show, the implication is that the Dr. is related to your abilities to give advice. So by that little lie alone, she negates all her good advice.

Me? I’m just an RD who deals with LTC and psychiatrics- eating disorders and other nutrition issues.

My smarts came from life.....

Thanks,
I also have an excellent therapist——
Who has been great in helping me undo the damage of 50 years of pure rotten and bad (both externally inflicted and internal)-— all this has given me a lot of insights, at least into what makes some people tick etc....

Even Dr. Laura is right once in a while. If she is so misguided and discredited, why even respond on a thread about her views? Isn’t that beneath your experience?

I respond for the same reasons you do....debate is fun....and I was pinged by a friend (and other friends etc).

She’s right sometimes, but I sincerely believe her to be a deeply self-loathihg female, which taints most of what she says.

That's very sad. I hope she finds a way to make things better for herself. Sometimes problems can seem insurmountable.
