Not good, and not fairplay, so the targeted people just have to be tough and more discerning than the manipulations, personally guess.
While on the topic of paranoia, when the television shows a rapid sequence of images or background patterns, sometimes look the other way in case there's some subliminal message or hypnosis attempt. Improbable, and acting in such a manner is quite paranoid/tinfoily, but there's little downside to averting gaze for a few seconds, and in the off chance there is a subliminal message, then the aversion was the proper move.
I recall being subjected to such image barrages in Junior High School, and there were probably subliminals in those. I did not watch the whole thing, as they gave me a headache.
I have seen that when the camera gets all 'jiggety' with different angles and zooming in and out, it seems as if there is often little to see, and the camera tricks are there to keep your attention (or try to) when there really isn't much there.
I don't watch shows that pull that cheap trick, but I don't watch much TV anyway. I have grandchildren if I want to watch something that won't hold still...(8^D)
