No love fest for Rove ["I hate Karl Rove: He is a war criminal,......]
Daily Iowan ^

No love fest for Rove Lauren Sieben - The Daily Iowan Issue date: 3/10/08 Section: Metro

Karl Rove protesters didn't stop at picket signs and chants to express their anger over the former Deputy Chief of Staff's UI appearance Sunday night.

Local protest group Seeds of Dissent and the UI Antiwar Committee held events protesting Rove's appearance at the IMU. Seeds of Dissent hosted a pre-Rove protest event at the Mill, 120 E. Burlington St., and the Antiwar Committee held a press conference and protest in the IMU prior to Rove's lecture. The Antiwar Committee specifically protested Rove for his role in creating Iraq war policy, exposing CIA operative Valerie Plame, and the firings of 93 U.S. attorneys. The committee also protested the $40,000 compensation Rove received from the UI Lecture Committee.

Greg Thompson, who performs with wife Jean Thompson in Seeds of Dissent, defined the group as an antiwar musical revue.

"We call ourselves the Seeds of Dissent because we hope to sow the seeds of dissent against the war and use our music as a tool against the war," Greg Thompson said.

Seeds of Dissent features seven different acts. Andrew Alemao, a member of the Antiwar Committee, opened the show with an original song. His lyrics varied from broad attacks on the U.S. government to specific remarks about Rove.

"You can't be a traitor and call yourself loyal, hey Mr. Rove I hope you choke on your oil," Alemao sang.

Marv Hain Jr., a member of the Seeds of Dissent who performs under the name This Machine, said that his music focuses on social change.

"As a team, we noticed that not many musicians are focusing on social problems," he said. "We seek to fill that gap."

What's funny about these self-centered hippies is that in the "Declaration of the Jury of Conscience", ignoring them was declared to be a "war crime".

Not kidding.

“.....not many musicians are focusing on social problems....”

I notice too, that a lot of engineers are not focusing on problems in the art world. Too, there aren’t many accountants that focus on problems with architecture. There also aren’t many chemists dwelling on problems in the aerospace industry.

Anyway, my prayers have been answered. Can the aged, preachy musicians like Neil Young, Springsteen and Bono PLEASE follow this trend?

To me, those signs just say “I am a moron who has no idea what’s going on.”

Really, isn’t it good that at least they self-identify? That way we know who to laugh at.

and the firings of 93 U.S. attorneys.

Did I miss something? Only a few US attorneys have been replaced in the Bush Administration. It was Clinton who fired all 93 of them.

The memory hole is alive and well.

Actually, both Bush and Clinton fired all U.S. Attorneys at the beginning of their terms and replaced them with their own bunch. Bush did it over a period of days/weeks, Clinton (Reno) did it on a single day (hence Reno hit the headlines).

But you are correct, the article is wrong. Rove only proposed firing all 93 U.S. Attorneys at the beginning of the 2nd term, but it didn’t happen. They fired a handful (8?) that were the subject of the congressional hearings (Carol Lam, et al)

As to the initial firings at the beginning of Bush’s term, here is how Kyle Sampson (Gonzales ex-Chief of Staff) described it in emails released during hearings:

• “Clinton fired all Bush USAs in one fell swoop. Has been described to me as ‘have your offices cleared out by the end of the week.’ We fired all Clinton USAs (except Mueller and Warner), but staggered it more and permitted some to stay on for, several months (including Mary Jo White in SDNY who we permitted to stay on for many months).”
[email March 04, 2007]

• “Reagan U.S. Attorneys appointed in 1981 stayed on through the entire Reagan Administration; Bush41 even had to establish that Reagan-appointed U.S. Attorneys would not be permitted to continue on through the Bush41 Administration.”
[email January 09, 2005]

Ron Kinum, a retired military veteran and member of the UI Antiwar Committee, was also in attendance at the Mill.

"We want to show disapproval for Karl Rove - he's a criminal," Kinum said. "I'm here to protest the people who get away with evil."

FReepers, you have to Google that guy, he's absolutely -- Cuckoo - Cuckoo - Cuckoo

Here he claims to be a "retired military veteran", that means 20 years min (IIRC). Yet, he's lived in a homeless shelter, now section Eight housing, went to Truck Driver school and drove a semi for seven years, AND THEN ... was a Locomotive Engineer!

He's also a Green Party (cough) activist and seems to be an Iowa City gadfly. And from what I gather everyone wishes he'd move to .... Timbuktu.

The guy is really freaking nuts. (Security should be watching him -- CLOSELY)
