Obama Pastors' Sermons May Violate Tax Laws Famous Parishioner Disavows Himself From Partisan Tilt
WSJ ^ | March 10, 2008 | SUZANNE SATALINE

...Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. compared presidential candidate Barack Obama's impoverished childhood to Jesus Christ's. "Barack knows what it means to be a black man living in a country and a culture that is controlled by rich white people... Hillary... can never know that."

Mr. Wright wasn't at a convention or a campaign stop. He was standing at the pulpit...

Mr. Wright... has previously been criticized for comments deriding President George Bush and lauding Louis Farrakhan... Now Mr. Wright's ...repeated enthusiastic promotion ...may be running afoul of federal tax law, which says churches ...endanger their tax-exempt status by endorsing or opposing candidates...

the United Church of Christ, recently disclosed that it's being investigated by the Internal Revenue Service for a speech Sen. Obama gave to 10,000 people at a church conference...

attorneys say that a growing number of congregations are delving into issue advocacy and partisan politics... A Baptist church in California has acknowledged it's under IRS scrutiny after a watchdog group complained that the church backed Republican Mike Huckabee...

Some of the sermons mentioned Sen. Clinton or her husband in unflattering ways... Mr. Wright declared that Hillary Clinton "ain't had to work twice as hard just to get accepted by the rich white folk who run everything or to get a passing grade when you know you are smarter than that 'C' student sitting in the White House." On Jan. 13, Mr. Wright told the Trinity congregation that some people say, "'Hillary is married to Bill and Bill [has] been good to us.'" Mr. Wright continued, "No, he ain't!"...

Since Congress amended the tax law... only two churches have had their tax-exemptions revoked... The most recent case involved Branch Ministries Inc., which ...placed full-page ads in two newspapers in 1992 urging Christians not to vote for then-candidate Bill Clinton...

This article is a waste of ink & paper. They would only be endangered if this was a predominately white, Conservative, suburban church - this, however, is a lib minority Church...so no problem - they can continue to rant and rave about B. Hussain Obama as much as they want..

Mr. Wright seems to be one angry Christian. If he talks this way from his pulpit, he is being very UN-Christian like.

Hillary! needs to hang this church and its pastor around B. Hussein Obama’s neck like an albatross.

McCain, too, but he won't.

He really said that? I would not feel at all comfortable in his racist church with that racist pastor. I highly doubt they would want me there or be happy I was there either!

Have you been to South Africa? I'm guessing not, since it has the 27th largest economy in the world, and white people in South Africa (including several Alter Kaker cousins) are doing just fine.

As for Liberia, you're right it's been a hellhole, but the President, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf is not wealthy, and is, in fact, a democratically-elected Harvard-educated technocrat who has done a tremendous job of improving her country and has made a priority of improving Liberia's relationships with the United States. Implying as you did that all of African rulers are kleptocratic thugs is inaccurate.

Anyone else finding it odd that this issue is being raised against Obama but the Clintons have been campaigning in Churches for years?

South Africa is a great place to be from. In Israel I met plenty of Jews who got the heck out

The real story, the one that not even Rush talks about, is Obama's active campaigning (while a US Senator) for a Reala Odinga in Kenya.

Odinga is in bed with an East Africa islamic group that seeks the imposition of Sharia Law in Kenya.

Odinga lost and the killing began.

Odinga says he is Obama's cousin, a claim that Obama has not rejected.

Odinga and Obama speak on a regular basis.

Odinga is the nine hundred pound gorilla that everyone is pretending not to see.

“As for Liberia, you’re right it’s been a hellhole, but the President, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf is not wealthy,”

You are correct sir. She is a real lesson in courage. Before her, it was revolution after revolution there with the strongarm leaders taking a cut of the diamond trade. We have had to evacuate our embassy there a number of times over the years. I was on ship once where we were almost called in to do a NEOPS (Non Combat Evacuation Operation) from our embassy there.

Its funny how we are always lectured by the uppity Europeans yet a lot of the mess in Africa can be pointed back to European colonialism. When you own a country for so long it might be nice if you teach them how to govern themselves after you leave.

Look at the Phillipines. While its not perfect it is a functioning democracy who holds elections and has peaceful transfers of power. They were one of our few colonial possesions having gotten them from the Spainish after the Spainish/American war. We taught them democracy and had a peaceful transition to their own government after WWII. Something that most European countrys failed to do in Africa.

Exactly right, I'll agree with this action when they investigate all the other Black churches whose ministers have been given walking around money and who have provided pulpits for democrat candidates for years.
