The flow of blood may be ebbing, but the flood of money into the Iraq war is steadily rising, new analyses show. In 2008, its sixth year, the war will cost approximately $12 billion a month, triple the "burn" rate of its earliest years, Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph E. Stiglitz and co-author Linda J. Bilmes report in a new book.

12 Billion?

Our bilateral trade deficit with China alone, is double that.

That’s a $hitload of money to be sure. But I’d rather see my share of it spent there than let Nancy Pelosi blow it here.

Funny how we never see articles about how much Socialist Security, Medicare, Welfare, etc are costing us every month...

I was gonna say something like that. How much does entitlement spending cost? Much, much more.

A bargain at twice the price! Though for sure the price will drop as conditions continue to improve in Iraq.

Was there a guarantee in the bill of sale? Nope. Your post is almost laughable. Idealistic.

A more important question is:

What will be the monthly cost to the U.S. if/when we withdraw our forces protecting us against terrorism?

I suspect it will be a lot more than $12 Bil per month.

With oil prices so high I wonder where are all the Iraq Oil Proceeds. The cost of taking out Hussein was factored in by the assets of the oil reserves. They should have enough oil production to be self supporting.

I'll bite.

Why would it cost more to withdraw from Iraq, to protect the USA from attack, that isn't already being spent?

A deeper question, in terms of cash and ethics is: Are bombs (and effective application of them) more cheaper than peacekeeping?

Iraq is producing about 2.4 million barrels a day but is expected to be doing 4 million a day by the end of 2008.

Meaning we’re getting more than twice that in goods from China every month in return. I don’t see how the number is relevant.

“Our bilateral trade deficit with China alone, is double that.”

Exactly what are you implying by that? If anything, a statement like that just illustrates to me the ridiculous cost of this war. When you can scarcely find anything on a shelf made in the USA anymore and where you can scarcely find anything not made in China...well, perhaps you see my point?

As another poster noted, that’s close to $2,000 for every family of 4 in the United States. An annual household income in the US is $48,000. That’s 1 in every 12 dollars a family makes sent out to fund this war. That is an expense I see as unacceptable. It’s time to stabilize things and start having Iraq pay for itself as Bush claimed it would.

The ONLY time liberals care about how much money is spent on things is when it is the Military.

Then you have to analyze it endlessly and find ways to cut it.

Spending money on useless social welfare programs is dismissed as necessary with a wave of the hand.

$12 billion is about what NASA gets for the whole year. And the cumulative total spent on Iraq is a large amount and several times what the Administration predicted it would cost.

That money could have gone for better purposes such as research or investment in our economy. It wouldn't necessarily have been blown.
