Photo Expert: Second Person Seen In SUV In (UNC Student Prez Eve) Carson Murder Case
Raleigh Chronicle ^ | March 9, 2008 | Staff

Posted on 03/09/2008 4:35:40 PM PDT by abb

A photography expert with over 30 years of experience says that a second person can be seen in the back seat of the SUV in a photo provided by police regarding the murder of UNC student Eve Carson.

William Mathis of Mathis & Jones Communications near St. Louis, Missouri initially contacted the Raleigh Chronicle newspaper to provide a color enhanced version of the ATM surveillance photos that were provided by Chapel Hill Police.

UNC student body president Eve Carson, age 22, was found murdered on Wednesday morning in Chapel Hill and police are looking for the man whose photo was taken while using her ATM card.

According to his bio, Mathis is an award-winning expert in photography with over 30 years of experience and works to enhance digital photographs for a living. He uses large format cameras, printers, and other specialized equipment to do his work which has included architectural photography for large architectural firms such as HOK, worked as an official photographer for historic site renovations, and has performed graphic arts design in the sports industry.

Mathis saw an interview with the editor of the Raleigh Chronicle about the case on MSNBC on Sunday morning and decided to help out, especially since he is originally from North Carolina.

"I have daughters at Vanderbilt and University of Maryland and this type of heinous crime has to be stopped," said Mathis. "It is the least I could do."

Mathis provided the Raleigh Chronicle two colorized versions of the original grainy black and white photos that Chapel Hill Police provided to the media on Saturday. He also improved upon the color of the "retro" Houston Astros baseball cap that the suspect appears to be wearing.

However, while working on the photos, Mathis noticed something else in the background, which he did not notice until he started examining the photos closely.

"It also looks like there is a very large person in the backseat," said Mathis, who said he noticed the figure when he printed out a very large copy of the photo.

Mathis has large format printers that can print copies of pictures several feet across, to the point of being life-sized.

"When I blew them up, I noticed...hey, there's another person back there," said Mathis.

Mathis said an outline of a shoulder can be seen in the back seat and although no face can be seen, he feels that after reviewing the photo that another person is in the vehicle.

"[The figure] is a very big man," said Mathis.

Mathis said he believes the second person in the back seat is also wearing a baseball cap.

Indeed, looking at the original black and white photographs provided by police (see below), a very dark outline against the light-colored leather seats of the SUV in the back can be seen. The outline blocks all light and does not seem to be a shadow.

The outline seems to be in the shape of a person, although that is certainly not confirmed by Chapel Hill Police at this time. It could be something else that simply appears to be a person in the photographs.

Mathis said it would be better to work with a higher resolution version of the photo than the one handed out to the media.

Chapel Hill Police have not mentioned a second person in their discussions of the case, but the Raleigh Chronicle will notify police of the photo expert's opinion.

The official spokesman for the Chapel Hill Police Department, Lt. Kevin Gunter, was not immediately available for comment in the case. Two messages were left with the police department on Sunday afternoon including one with the staff duty officer at the front desk.

I think we have each other confused because I have no idea what you are talking about. I was joking around about the Katrina refugee joke because the poster was teasing me about ‘do you reckon he’s an Astro fan’, blah blah blah. Anyway, nice to meet you! Let’s start over.

It’s really a shame that the Constitution doesn’t allow the proper treatment for this sort of scum. That is, to tie his hands behind him, stand him in bare feet on a large block of ice, and then string his neck up to a tree branch with a short rope. On a cool day in the shade, it might be ten or twelve hours before he gets his just reward.

I’m not saying anyone should actually do this, of course. I’m just sayin’.

Seems this might be the second (or more) in a line of sacrifices of maidens.

So, here is another thread with new photos, and the opinions of folks who live there.

So, in other words, no actual data - just more speculation.

“why do murderous dogs go roaming in upscale college areas?”

Leaner meat.

“I think we would be as outraged if this same girl was black. “

Here’s the issue that most might miss.

The suspect in this case appears to be a gang member.

To win favor of the gang, this ‘type’ of person would kill a white girl, or a black girl, or a hispanic woman, or a hispanic man, or a child, or a dog, or his nephews and neighbors.

Race isn’t the issue. Domination by violence is the issue.

I thought the premise of the article posted was that this photo expert had used editing techniques to improve and specifically enhance the logo on the cap, to make it obvious for a media release.

If it leads to the arrest of a person, so be it.
I would imagine the prosecutors would capitalize on other firmer evidence, once they find him.

This “H” isn’t meant to provide uncontrovertible evidence.

I heard his girlfriend is ratting him out anyway, so maybe we are bouncing around on a moot point. ???

Time will tell.

Of course the real source of your "data" on this is some sort of chain email, right?

Well, you could start with the murder/rapes in Wichita involving black males and a group of white males and females.

Stripped them down on a ball field, had deviant sex with them, then murdered them.

Used a phrase similar to “kill the white girl”, except the street vernacular for ‘girl’ was used.

And it’s not only black gangs. MS-13 has it’s own initiation.

I am not convinced they specifically targeted her knowing who she was, except as just a college kid off campus in a nice vehicle.

There is an incredibly low probability of some college student being armed if they are leaving a campus, and that makes them easy meat.

Women are less likely to be effective at physical confrontation as well.

Some predator(s) out there playing the odds.

Just more data.

No, you haven't supplied any data at all.

Neither of these cases has been described by any source involved in the investigation as a gang crime, let alone characterized as a gang initiation.

And, since most new gang recruits are thirteen or fourteen years old I doubt the perps in either murder had all of a sudden decided to join gangs later in life.

If they are gang members, they have been for years.

Guess you missed this quote from the gang expert in the article:

“Glass said that even if the suspect is in gang, it is unlikely Carson’s death was gang-related.
“This case, I firmly believe is a random act of violence, by some very violent young men,” he said.”

And then you said:

“To win favor of the gang, this ‘type’ of person would kill a white girl, or a black girl, or a hispanic woman, or a hispanic man, or a child, or a dog, or his nephews and neighbors.

Race isn’t the issue. Domination by violence is the issue.”

But earlier you said they had to kill a “maiden,” which you alleged means a white girl.

....said that even if the suspect is a mafia hit-man, it is unlikely that the murder of a prominent businessman was mafia related.
This case, I firmly believe is a random act of violence, by some very violent hit men.

“But earlier you said they had to kill a “maiden,” which you alleged means a white girl.”

This is the gang initiation in some gangs.
In others, you must survive getting the hell beat out of you.

Once in a gang, you kill anyone you are asked to. Or feel like.

What I am trying to point out is that this wasn’t a love affair gone wrong.

It is gang violence. Kill anyone. Steal from them.
White chicks are just easy prey.

This would appear to be a member of a gang, and he robbed and killed a young white woman with no more consideration than he would give to selling crack to his sister.

I am not saying there will be a rampage of ‘white chick’ murders.

I am saying that this is an accepted and expected part of their violent gang culture, and to believe that it is not, is just resistance to the truth.

A jury won’t see the colorized version of this. A jury would have the bank black and white photo, time stamp, computer print out of her card usage, etc. presented as evidence. The police colorized this image for news release only to generate an easier to ID photo for public consumption to bring the perp in. The enhancement is solely for public id’ing...nothing more.

“If this was some toothless hick redneck, the media would be on it like one of Vick’s dogs. But they can’t milk this story now. It will fade away.”

Doesn’t seem to me to be fading much.
