CAMP SALERNO, Afghanistan — A 19-year-old medic from Texas will become the first woman in Afghanistan and only the second woman since World War II to receive the Silver Star, the nation's third-highest medal for valor.
Army Spc. Monica Lin Brown saved the lives of fellow soldiers after a roadside bomb tore through a convoy of Humvees in the eastern Paktia province in April 2007, the military said.
After the explosion, which wounded five soldiers in her unit, Brown ran through insurgent gunfire and used her body to shield wounded comrades as mortars fell less than 100 yards away, the military said.
"I did not really think about anything except for getting the guys to a safer location and getting them taken care of and getting them out of there," Brown told The Associated Press on Saturday at a U.S. base in the eastern province of Khost.
Brown, of Lake Jackson, Texas, is scheduled to receive the Silver Star later this month. She was part of a four-vehicle convoy patrolling near Jani Kheil in the eastern province of Paktia on April 25, 2007, when a bomb struck one of the Humvees.
"We stopped the convoy. I opened up my door and grabbed my aid bag," Brown said.
She started running toward the burning vehicle as insurgents opened fire. All five wounded soldiers had scrambled out.
"I assessed the patients to see how bad they were. We tried to move them to a safer location because we were still receiving incoming fire," Brown said.

Wonder what the MSM is doing these days?
You have to remember how the MSM Thinks. In their eyes, This is an article about an "oppressed minority". So the MSM has no problems with saying nice things her, even if she is part of the military.
And to think that she cannot carry a concealed weapon at home unless she applies for a permit. Luckily, in Teaxas she won’t have any problem obtaining one.

As an aside, wonder what the reason is that there has been such a paucity of medals for valor awarded to date, as I cannot believe it is because of any lack of courage or bravery???

Could tell you some real pioneering stories but then I would get misty eyed just thinking what America really was like in those days.

Granted newspapers have rarely reported on the
war for at least half a year, which would lead
a cynic to believe that the bloody civil war,
along with the daily loss of thousands of lives
is being hushed up by the MSM. Furthermore,
suicide bombings which resulted in
suicide bombers killing thousands of
Baghdad citizens on a daily basis prior to the
surge is no longer being reported.
It makes no sense, how could General
Petraeus bring an end to a horrible, bloody war
in which just a year ago massive suicide
bombings were killing thousands of Iraqis on a
daily basis. Particularly in light of Hillary Clinton's
summarization of General Petraeus’s character:
“I think that the reports that you provide to
us really require the willing suspension of
disbelief.” And the marxist moveon.Org’s
description of the general's dispicable character:
“GENERAL PETRAEUS OR GENERAL BETRAY US.”
2of2 Therefore, since liberals, progressives, and
democrats proclaim that the surge has failed,
it's incumbent upon them to urge the MSM media,
the LA Times, Washington Post, and the New
York Times to resume reporting on the “civil
war” and the bloody slaughter taking place on a
daily basis in Iraq. Furthermore, the New York
Times has betrayed liberals, progressives,
democrats, and democratic politicians by
publishing an extremely damaging article by two
of it's veteran war correspondents titled “A War
We Just Might Win.” Furthermore, they hired
William Kristol, editor of the weekly standard,
as a correspondent. Bill is war hawk that
predicted the surge would be a success and
that Bush would succeed in an article titled
“Why Bush will be a winner.”
John Burns joined a group of historians and
reporters discussing the Iraq war on the
Charlie Rose show on the 5th of March.
Burns was awarded two pulitzer prizes
for his courageous wartime reporting. Burns
spent five years covering Iraq as the New York
Times Baghdad bureau chief and said that
Al-Anbar province(comprising 1/3 of Iraq)
once written off in the National Intelligence
Estimeate as taken over by Al-Qaeda was
now peaceful and cleared of Al-Qaeda by
by Sunni tribes who joined the marines
fighting Al-Qaeda in a national movement
by over 300 sheiks called “The Awakening.”
Al-Qaeda escaped to Diyala province only to
have Diyala’s tribes join U.S. forces in their
fight against Al-Qaeda. Al-Qaeda is largely
cleared out of Diyala province. The Awakening
movement has now spread to the Shiites in
Southern Iraq with the Shiites joining
the U.S. forces fighting Al-Qaeda. Burns
said that Al-Sadr agreed to another six months
ceasefire due to operations by coalition forces
against “Al-Sadr’s” Mahdi army. The Mahdi
army is largely scattered and coalition
operations are now concentrated on Shiite
splinter groups trained in Iran.
These are dishonest articles and reports by
New York Times reporters that should never have
seen the light of day. By not reporting on the
bloody civil war and massive loss of life taking
place on a daily basis, the liberal mainstream
media has led Jolie to believe that General
Petraeus is succeeding in implementing
President Bush's order to execute the surge
and end the civil war and stabilize Iraq. Being
aware of the compassionate nature of liberals,
secular progressives, and democrats, and
their deep love and compassion for the
suffering of Iraqis, I can only imagine their
exasperation with Jolie's naivete.
The MSM has got to immediately report on the
civil war and bloody slaughter that is still
taking place in Iraq before millions of
refugees flood back into that awful meat
grinder. Come on New York Times, save those
refugees and report on all the slaughter going
on or they might believe that General Petraeus
is succeeding and that there has been a drastic
decrease in violence and that Al-Qaeda is
taking a bloody beating. Hurry, New York
Times!!! We all count on you for the truth.
So if you're done with exposing that
traiterous self-serving vile Mccain, please
expose the bloody mess those refugees
will be walking into. Please!!!
