City bans garbage disposal units (includes fine of up to $25,000 a day - Raleigh, NC)

City bans garbage disposal units

Residents of Raleigh, N.C., face stiff penalties if they install garbage disposal units in their kitchen sinks or repair existing ones if they break.

The City Council approved the ban on Wednesday, the Raleigh Chronicle reports. The ordinance includes a fine of up to $25,000 a day.

Officials said that anyone caught with an illegal disposal unit could also face a lifetime ban on getting city water. The ban covers several municipalities around Raleigh.

The garbage disposal units, which grind up leftover food and flush it into the sewer system, lead to pipes clogged with grease. That can lead to sewage overflowing into streams or ponds.

Raleigh residents are urged to collect grease in an old can or jar, allow it to harden and put it in the trash.

This happened in Spokane, WA. many years ago. Because of a drought situation, the local power company demanded people cut back on their use of electricity (due to the low water level in the reservoirs).

After a few months, the power company (with full backing of the city) raised their rates significantly to offset the money they say they lost from the decreased power usage.

Believe it or not, sometime later when the drought ended, the power company said it needed to raise electrical rates *again* because now there was too much water in the reservoirs.

“As a plumber, I couldn’t be happier. To many people take the name dispos-all to literally. You wouldn’t believe the stuff people try to send down the drains.”

Back when I was an apprentice we got a call from a Catholic girls school. What did we find stopping up the pipe? Disposable syringes and condoms. Go figure.

"Looks like the NJ and NY libs are infesting NC. It’s a shame to ruin such a beautiful place."

While you are probably right, this is one NYer that would love to follow his older brother down to NC and rest assured the lib-o-meter in NC would decrease a few points. You could not ask for 2 more Conservative families.

Anyone know how to sell a house built around a pipe organ? That is the only thing keeping my family here.

My "list" is tucked away in my funny looking head! :-) It's probably best that I don't put it here, lest they show up at my door and want to ask "questions". :-)

We're doing good here buddy! LFOD!

There’s no ban on home schooling in California. Sorry.

“There’s no ban on home schooling in California. Sorry.”

You’re technically correct. California has only taken the first step towards banning home schooling:

Finally, a sane post.

If your drains empty into somebody else's sewer, that somebody else has some say in what you dump down your drains.

If you don't like that, get your own sewer system.

Some raw veggies gum up the works. Celery gets them tangled up in fibers.

The worst I ever saw was sweet potato peelings ... The individual in question stuffed her garbage grinder full of them, then started the water and turned it on. Grinder didn't jam, but the entire "trap" (u-shaped pipe) downstream of the grinder got plugged with material.

Yours Truly became the Hero Of The Day, by donning his amateur plumber hat.

That story’s been twisted out of proportion to get folks riled up. I live in a red county by the way, of which there are more than blue in my state, but then I’m not sure if facts really matter much to you.

The story has been twisted? You mean that a California appellate judge didn’t make that ruling?!
And Berkley didn’t try to ban Armed Forces recruiting?
And don’t even get me started on San Francisco.

I know that Northern California tends to be more purple, even red in places, but on balance, Kalifornia is Blue. More people in the blue areas. But I’m sure you didn’t notice. You know, some people in California think they are conservative because they are smack in the middle of lefty land. Relative to your neighbors, you probably are a hard core conservative.
You know, the Clintons, have this way of dealing with things they don’t like, first they discredit the charges, no specifics, they simply say they aren’t true, or out of context, etc. Then they attack the messenger.

Hmmmmmmm.

And with this, I close. This has devolved into something less than productive. Enjoy the People’s Republik.
