Vatican cardinal: Iran sanctions shocking
Tehran Times ^ | 09MAR08 | Tehran Times

Vatican’s President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace has voiced surprise over the third round of sanctions against Iran.

“Like any other state, Iran is entitled to peaceful use of nuclear energy. This is Vatican’s stance toward Iran’s nuclear issue and it has always been one of our principal policies,” Cardinal Renato Raffaele Martino, said on Thursday.

He made the remarks in a meeting with Iran’s chargé d’affaires to Vatican, Mohammad Hossein Mirzaaqaie.

Martino also noted that Vatican welcomes IAEA’s stand and role as well as its recently released report indicating Iran’s positive cooperation with the agency.

“The IAEA’s report clearly states Iran’s cooperation with the agency and urges diplomacy over Tehran’s nuclear standoff.”

“As an internationally approved institution, world powers as well as the UN Security Council should prepare the grounds for the Agency to accomplish its duties,” the Vatican’s cardinal highlighted.

The Iranian envoy, for his part, called for further Tehran-Vatican cooperation in a bid to ensure the establishment and the promotion of justice, peace and international security.

I think many of the Catholic bashers on this site are former Catholics who for very sad and sorry reasons could not live up to the sacramental standards of the church. Because of their feeling of inadequacy and rejection, they vent hatred and nonsense toward the most humanitarian organization of all time.

Ironically, if all Jews were to leave Israel, the next target of Muslim ire might well be the occupation of (formerly Muslim) Spain.

Well, Cardinal, chances are The Vatican is like 10th on the Ayatollahs’ list of targets, with Israel and America being at the top.

As a Catholic, it sickens me when a representative of my church makes stupid statements like this. I would gladly tell the good Cardinal to defecate and fall back in it.

Leave world security to the guys with the guns, Cardinal.

Dunno about you, but for some reason all those words in one sentence conjoured up an image of an alter boy voting for Clinton!

The Tehran Times is the first news source I go to to get accurate, unbiased news also. < /sarcasm>

Makes you wonder what the Cardinal actually said.

IF the report is accurate, the Cardinal (speaking for the Vatican State not the Catholic Church) is wrong...dead wrong and deserves the abuse. Just like Nancy Pelosi et. al. make stupid statements that don't represent the views of the U.S. government, this Cardinal's "alleged" statement probably doesn't represent the views of the head of the Vatican State.

I just have to chuckle a bit at how otherwise discerning individuals display their need to want to believe ANYTHING negative about Catholicism will immediately believe an article from the Tehran Times because it satisfies their hatred.

From Wikipedia: Tehran Times is an English-language daily newspaper based in Tehran, Iran. It was established in 1979 and is affiliated to the Islamic Propagation Organization. Its managing director Parviz Esmaeili also runs the Mehr News Agency.

Catholics.......The Vatican......never on the Jewish side...

A statement like that confirms that you're as big a buffoon as that Commie Martino.

You are right on. Contrary to the beliefs of some on this thread, there are many Iranians who would truly welcome regime change in their oppressive country. These people would be “nuked” along with the evildoers who are presently running the country. By the way, we can all thank Jimmy Carter for the state of Iran. As for the Vatican spokesman, is it a surprise that the Vatican would lobby for peace and avoidance of sanctions on the innocent population of Iran? Further, these people are not geopolitical strategists. They have one issue, and that is help those who need help. And they can be wrongheaded in that goal. But the Catholic hatred on Free Republic in general is a sickness, a cancer, that the founder should hit with some radiation therapy.

Idiots Like Martino seem to infest the Ranks of the Vatican Hierarchy and they should learn to SHUT THEIR MOUTHS since they have no Brains.

Didn’t they recently give out 10 rules on driving?

“Like any other state, Iran is entitled to peaceful use of nuclear energy."

Um . . . if I remember correctly, the United States isn't considered entitled to peaceful use of nuclear energy (at least not by Pete Seeger).

What Utter Nonsense!!!
I am a practicing Catholic for all my life and can still count how many times I have missed mass.

For the past 50 years or so the Vatican, has missed the mark because they took their focus off the teachings of Jesus Christ.

We have approximately 30 t0 50 % Homosexual Priests out of about 40,000 remaining Priests in the United States, according to a book by Father Cozzens.

Has the Vatican shown any feelings for the 11,000 victims of approx. 4500 Homosexual Priests in the past 50 years or so. From the Popes JPII and Bene XVI on Down???

I love My Catholic Faith but we need A Purge and Purification on a Grand Scale.

Well . . . y'got me! I'm a former Catholic and must confess that my anti-Catholicism is caused entirely by my feelings of inadequacy in not having what it takes to believe that the "old testament" is mythology, like all good Catholics do.

No wonder the Vatican is hostile to Israel. If the Jews rebuild the Temple, that might mean that Adam and Eve actually existed! Horrors!

Never heard of Fr. Cozzens but the Church has apologized too many times on this issue and paid out billions in lawsuit settlements. Also, new rules are in place to weed out the gays before they are admitted into seminaries. There is little doubt Satan would do anything to vanquish the Catholic Church but you must remember that Christ himself founded this church and proclaimed that it would prevail forever... Forever means forever so God is giving Catholics the means to keep the Church Holy and clean, even if it is a painful process. Vivat Jesus!!!!!!!

That is an odd interpretation if I ever saw one. The OT prophesied the coming of Christ so Catholics certainly do believe in the OT. But we also know the Lord brought a new way of thinking and thus we have Christianity anchored by Catholicism.

France doesnt have an oil energy problem as they get 90% of their energy from nuclear. Japan is still building nuclear plants. In the USA, we have the Democrats who are against development of energy unless you take food and burn it to make expensive energy. This is the sorry situation we are in due to these wrongheaded losers controlling US energy polciy. I for one think every nation on earth should be using nuclear power and be allowed to build plants. We would all be better off for it.

I don’t think it’s as much about Catholicism, as it is about western European trade dependencies, propaganda and resulting sentiments. People who do the trade also sponsor the media broadcasts. And the piece did come from an Iranian publication.

Most Protestants are also rather directed toward statements attributed to Paul. And Judaism does have a good case. There were many more witnesses present at Mt. Sinai.

Sometimes, religious considerations do come out in bad foreign relations moves, but it's not as bad as it was during the Medieval years and before--not for the time being.
