You never heard that before?! :-) He sure did say it! I probably got the exact wording wrong, but Chapel Hill folks were pissed at him for YEARS because of that! Ah well. I’ve got a friend that used to work for him on his staff when he was a Senator. She said he was dear person, and everybody who knew him misses him! :-) I didn’t know him, but I miss him anyway!

Maybe it’s because I lived waaaaay over on the coast in Wilmington.
Nobody much knew we existed until the interstate was finished.
I don’t doubt that he was a dear person, and a real Southern Gentleman.
Though I’ve been gone from NC for quite a few years, I miss him, too.
Too bad we can’t have 50 of him in the Senate.
