Library withheld papers on Clinton pardons

More than a thousand pages covering pardons granted by former president Bill Clinton during his final days in office have been withheld from the public.

Archivists at the Clinton Presidential Library decided to keep the papers out of a larger batch recently released because they covered confidential discussions with advisers.

Included in the more than 2800 documents that have been made public, letters in support of fugitive financier Marc Rich and his partner, both of whom were pardoned by Clinton.

The delays by the library in releasing documents have led to sharp criticism of Clinton and former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.

A spokeswoman for the National Archives, which runs the library, now says they may have misinterpreted a 2002 letter from the former president in which he left instructions on which pardon documents should be made public.

Don’t all Presidents withhold advice documents so Presidents can continue to get confidential advice. Its makes it pretty much impossible to tell when its being used for coverup.

Like Dick Cheney’s energy meetings. I’m sure Dems would love to correlate with that with the way energy tripled in cost but there is broad precedent.

Susan Cooper, a spokeswoman for the National Archives, which runs the library, said Friday that the federal agency may have misinterpreted Clinton’s instructions in a 2002 letter to the Archives on his presidential records when deciding what pardon documents to release.

“We had been interpreting the easing letter president Clinton wrote in a particular way and were interpreting it very conservatively,” Cooper said. “We then discovered in the course of conversations with (Clinton adviser Bruce Lindsey) that the president’s desire was to interpret the easing letter less conservatively and more openly. ... It is for that reason there was more material withheld in this pardon material than we would have if we had been reviewing this stuff later.”

Cooper said archivists don’t have any immediate plans to revisit the pardon records to determine whether additional papers should be made public because doing so would delay the release of other records. The library is expected to release 10,000 pages of Hillary Clinton’s schedules as first lady later this month.

“We’re serving several masters at the same time. If we do that and look at all of the materials we’ve released so far, we’re not going to get anything new out,” Cooper said. “What that means is Mrs. Clinton’s schedules would not be out on time and whatever is next in the queue would not be attended to.”

On his last day in office, President Clinton granted 140 pardons and 36 commutations, many of them controversial. The documents released include dozens of letters Clinton and his advisers received in the months before he left office advocating pardons for Rich and others.

Rich had fled the country after being indicted for tax evasion. His ex-wife, Denise Rich, had contributed $450,000 to the Clinton library and more than $1.1 million to the Democratic Party.

Since she was co-president, links her time in the WH to the “35 years” she has given to public service, and claims to have had extensive government and foreign affairs experience, etc., why shouldn’t her appointment books be released? I have no illusions .. they’re controlling ALL of this.

His advice from counselors = yes, but she was the unelected first person. Why should her papers be covered under that privilege?

Sure, but no other president’s wife has run for president herself. She wants to rewrite the rules, so fine.. let’s rewrite ‘em.

I didn’t realize they were papers that didn’t relate to advice to the President - you’re right that would be different if it was advice to the first lady only.

Yes if it doesn’t relate to Presidential advice that’s different.

Could be her breaking point .. we shall see.

Hillary did not pardon anyone, Bill did. She will always, much to her chagrin, carry the weight of the decisions HER HUSBAND made, during her attempt to be the Democratic nominee.

Both she and Obama are involved through public record with those named in the trials of "fund-raisers gone bad". Obama has Rezko present day, Clinton has Peter L. Paul/Clinton where she was supposed to testify (April should tell us more).

This will make McCain, by process of elimination, look like the only honest one running, not tied to any illegal activity of any kind.

The press last week ran 69 stories hitting hard at Obama. The others, for the first time, escaped the media wrath.

I will tell you one thing I find extremely odd. Obama seems to have protected himself from being photographed with people that have come out of his background. Clinton was recently shown with Rezko 17 years ago in a photo that suddenly appeared on Drudge from an unknown source and right into Wikipedia right after. No pictures (except Photoshop ) of Obama at dinners, events--? If you are in the public eye, should be pictures of you with "friends" oall over the society pages/news/politics.

The Honey Moon is over for Obama. The Honey Moon was "publicly" over for the Clintons a long time ago.

She also wants to re-write the DNC rules for the Michigan and Florida primaries. She wanted to rewrite the Texas Caucus rules because she does not do well in them. She probably will want to rewrite the Declaration of Independence and Constitution, and maybe the National Anthem.

I don't need to see the papers and the kool aiders will not believe anything; so what's the point? It was bribery and vote pandering. When you release terrorists who killed cops and there is no recourse, you can get away with anything.

The Clinton legacy is that they will never anywhere at anytime by anyone be held accountable for their crimes.
