China to clamp down after Bjork outburst

SHANGHAI — China says it will be stricter on foreign performers after Icelandic singer Bjork shouted “Tibet! Tibet!” at the end of her concert in Shanghai this week.

A statement by China's Culture Ministry said Bjork's outburst “broke Chinese law and hurt Chinese people's feelings.”

Bjork's exclamation came after a passionate performance of her song “Declare Independence” on Sunday.

The statement, posted on the Culture Ministry's website, also said there is no country that admits that Tibet is an independent country.

Bjork has performed the song to support other independence movements in the past, dedicating it to Kosovo while performing last month in Japan.

China's 58-year rule over Tibet has drawn frequent condemnation from foreign governments and activists, often inciting a prickly nationalism among the Chinese government. Many Tibetans consider the exiled Buddhist spiritual leader the Dalai Lama as their rightful leader.

Can we blame the Chinese for wanting to silence Bjork's caterwauling?

PO Commies is good, but does she just go around getting passionate about other countries? What else does she do except shout things at concerts, anything?

Are they sure that’s what she was saying? I’ve never understood a word she has ever said or sung.

She may have been saying “Goodnight, Shanghai, you’ve been a heck of an audience! Good night!”

“hurt Chinese people’s feelings”?
What about the displaced Tibetans?
What about the Tibetans murdered by the chi-coms?
Screw the chi-coms and their “hurt feelings”.
Hopefully a whole lot of athletes at the Olympics show some guts and show displeasure of the chi-coms human rights record.

“...hurt Chinese people’s feelings.”

This is not allowed; if you want to hurt someone, rape and torture a Tibetan nun.

It depends how the Chinese reaction in the aftermath. However, one thing is simple. If you go to a country, you don’t touch sensitive issue. That’s the common sense.

My country Malaysia has once refused to acknowledge Vietnam-controlled Cambodia and still considered the Pol Pot’s Cambodia as a legal regime even Khmer Rouge’s brutally is too clear to deny.

China says it will be stricter on foreign performers

How? Add a seven second delay between the microphone and the speakers? Shock collar? Machine gunning the band if it gets off script?

I expect this means that the pay for the tour will come after the performer leaves the country, which means that in reality there will be performers who obey the Chinese government rules but don't get paid anyway.

I doubt it. All it would take is for that to happen once and no other foreign acts would ever perform there. Realistically, since foreign performers can't be punished directly by the government, the government will fine the promoters heavily if performers say something out of line. This will cause promoters to include a long list of things performers can and cannot say during a performance, in a performers contract.

If the performers sign it and then say the wrong thing, they break the contract and are legally screwed, so to speak. If it were me I would publicly boycott China, and call on others to do the same if I wanted to embarrass the Commies.

It seems hypocritical to me to go to China and accept their money, then criticize their government.

Bjork should also join the McCain team and sing some of her “angry songs” for McCain. Both McCain and Bjork have some serious problems with their tempers, and they would be perfect for each other.
