Federal agents seized nearly 60 pounds of cocaine and 2,100 pounds of marijuana in separate incidents Tuesday at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint on Interstate 19 south of Tucson.
The first seizure happened about 10 a.m. at the I-19 traffic checkpoint near Amado, about 45 miles south of Tucson, after a Border Patrol agent noticed inconsistencies with a driver's immigration documents, according to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection press release.
A drug-sniffing dog then notified authorities the vehicle may have drugs in it and a U.S. Customs and Border Protection was allowed to search the vehicle, the release says. The cocaine was found in a hidden compartment in the floor of the vehicle.
The drugs, driver and vehicle were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
The second seizure happened about 10 p.m. the same day when a drug-sniffing dog at the Amado checkpoint alerted officials there might be narcotics in a tractor-trailer.
A search of the tractor-trailer found 103 bundles of marijuana hidden inside a load of rotten tomatoes and squash, the release says. The marijuana weighed 2,172 pounds.
The drugs, driver and vehicle were again turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Personal use only.
The dog found it in a load of rotten tomatoes? Our dogs have darn good noses!

If what I just wrote made you sad or angry,
it was probably just a joke.
they can find it in a load of fresh fish in ice...
Re the 2100 pound marijuana seizure. “That was some roach. Bite your head off.” (apologies to “Ghostbusters”)
I don’t know....
Sounds like the weight of a “Cheech-n-Chong” blunt.
They are amazing sniffers.
figure 4K a LB for the grass
$700 an oz for the coke
it adds up (not that I’m an expert)
I bet the folkes at democraticunderground.com would know. What am I doing here?
Damn! I remember when pot was $70 a kilo, delivered.
Thats quite a bit of narcotics for one day at the same checkpoint, thinking of what probably got through runs chills up my spine.
Actually that doesn’t tell me anything if I don’t know how many oz’s are in a lb. But don’t blame me.
That was when the dollar was worth something
The border has nothing on Northeast Indiana-—
