To the GOP's self-righteous Purists

If there's a single thread that runs through the e-mails I receive from peevish Republicans, it's that none of the current candidates possesses the conservative purity of Ronald Reagan. One could almost get the idea that Dutch was betrayed by Pontius Pilate and crucified on Calvary. But that wasn't exactly the case. The fact of the matter is that Gov. Reagan gave Gov. Jerry Brown a run for his money – or should I say our money? – when it came to raising taxes here in California. But, in spite of the additional revenue, he was responsible in large part for the streets of our cities being turned into public latrines by the unwashed, the unwanted and the insane when, to save a few bucks, he oversaw the closing of California's mental hospitals. He also signed the nation's most liberal abortion bill. Although he had a change of heart a scant six months later, one never hears him condemned for flip-flopping ...

...

What truly confounds me are those cuckoos who would prefer to see such socialists as Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama win the election than to sully themselves by voting for a Republican who was only their second or third or even fourth choice. To them I say, before proving that you place your own ego gratification above what's best for America, keep in mind that most of the Supreme Court justices are in their 70s or even, in the case of John Paul Stevens, fast approaching 90. Do you really want one of those two Democrats stacking the Court for the foreseeable future? Presidents come and go, but justices go on seemingly forever. Kennedy and Scalia have been on the bench since Reagan put them there. Stevens, for heaven's sake, was appointed during the ...

“I sincerely doubt that you are sorry about anything, it is clearly how you feel, you just didn’t enjoy getting blasted by everyone that thought your comments were very inappropriate.”

Yes, that was how I felt, but I should have kept the personal insults to myself — regardless of who I was talking about. (That doesn’t justify you and others hurling personal insults back at me, by the way, but that’s another topic.)

This whole discussion is quite ironic. On the one hand, people are criticizing me for not showing proper respect for a military guy. But here I am trying to get those same people to show some respect for McCain’s military sacrifices.

Why is McCain the Republican nominee? Ultimately, I believe it traces back to his military record. Now, I agree with you that his military record does not qualify him to be President. But I also believe that many Republicans voted for him were heavily influenced by his military background.

Yet many here on FR diss the guy and show no respect whatsoever for the sacrifice he made for his country. And here I am, reminding FReepers of that sacrifice. Quite ironic.

I know all about McCain’s problems. But I also have enough perspective to realize that he is head and shoulders above either of the rats. I suggest you read the following little email I received a few days ago from Michael Zak.

On this day in 1973, Lt. Commander John McCain was released from a North Vietnamese prison.

The missile that shot down his fighter-bomber broke both arms and a leg, and he nearly drowned after parachuting into a lake. He was then bayoneted and beaten. McCain refused his captors’ demands that he divulge military information in return for medical treatment. Despite being tortured, McCain also refused offers from the communists to free him ahead of other servicemen who had been imprisoned longer.

President Richard Nixon welcomed McCain home, after five and a half years of captivity, much of that time in solitary confinement.

Son and grandson of admirals, John McCain graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1958. In 1967, a massive fire broke out on the deck of his aircraft carrier. As bombs and jet fuel exploded nearby, McCain was injured trying to rescue a fellow pilot. One hundred and thirty-four men died in the inferno.

In 1982, McCain was elected to the first of two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1986, he won the first of four terms in the U.S. Senate.

President McCain — what a terrific campaign slogan that would be! It sounds great and brings to mind the horrors of the Democrat alternative.

President McCain

Here is what McCain did to POWs, MIAs and veterans past, present and future.

The War Secrets Sen. John McCain Hides

In response, the backers of the original statute cited the Pentagon's stained record on MIA's and argued that military history had shown that speed of action is critical to the chances of recovering a missing man. Moving "the bureaucracy" to Washington, they said, was merely a way to sweep the issue under a rug.

Chilling effect cited

One final evisceration in the law was McCain's removal of all its enforcement teeth. The original act provided for criminal penalties for anyone, such as military bureaucrats in Washington, who destroy or cover up or withhold from families any information about a missing man. McCain erased this part of the law. He said the penalties would have a chilling effect on the Pentagon's ability to recruit personnel for its POW/MIA office.

Those are only two small paragraphs in a long article full of his betrayals.

I don’t know why McCain fought these POW/MIA measures, but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he was not acting maliciously.

Do you honestly believe that he wanted to abandon POWs and MIAs, considering that he was a POW himself for over five years? Or do you perhaps believe that he has something to hide?

Well, maybe the experience of being tortured and denied badly needed medical treatment, then “breaking” under the pressure, is so personal that he wants to keep it under wraps. If so, who are you to say otherwise? Give the guy a break for crying out loud.

I find it a bit strange that FR prides itself on being so patriotic, yet people like you gladly trash an American war hero.

He did abandon POWs and MIAs. I can’t crawl into his head and see why and I don’t want to. He worked hand-in-hand with John Kerry on it and I know what we all said his motives were.

At least for now, I still have the freedom to vote for whom I wish (or not), and I intend to exercise that right.

Why does this nimrod assume that a Prez Juan McLame would appoint conservative Supremes? That would be offensive to his best buds, the Senate Dims, and “maverick” Juan always stays in their good graces.

I remember reading that about Kerry, but I don’t see what it has to do with McCain. Kerry is scum, but I think McCain is an honorable man even if he is wrong on some major issues.

David Horowitz had an article on Frontpage a couple of weeks ago written by one of McCain’s fellow POWs at the infamous “Hanoi Hilton.” The guy said that McCain did nothing wrong there. Until I hear something credible to counter that account, I will give McCain the benefit of the doubt.

McCain and Kerry worked hand-in-hand on that committee that McCain ran. It was McCain that shut it down.

It doesn't matter. If you don't have a problem with him attacking the 1st Amendment in the biggest infringement in the history of our country why would you care about anything else?

His F rating with GOA. His wanting to institute Kyoto style restrictions on our country, leaving all other countries to do what they want, costing trillions of dollars for Glowbull Warming. Amnesty for 12-20 million illegal aliens who will then be anchors for all their family members costing directly from the treasury billions of dollars without counting indirect costs of taking jobs, crime and so on. Also creating a super-voting block of Dems that will continue to grow as they bring in family members. If that all sounds honorable to you then go for it. Vote for the man who takes Soros money and gets legislation passed for him.

I have a problem with all those issues. But the rats are just as bad or worse than McCain on all of those issues.

McCain beats them hands down on the war and his commitment to the troops. He also beats them on taxes. Yes, I am aware that he voted against the Bush tax cuts, but he has a decent lifetime record on taxes, and he has said that he will work to make the Bush tax cuts permanent. That’s a hell of a lot more than you can say for Osamabama or Hillary.

Yes, McCain is the “lesser of two evils.” Until Jesus Christ returns and runs for President, that is the best we can do.

McCain is better on the war. He wants to close Gitmo. Give the jihadis citizen's rights. Opposes waterboarding. Created legislation to make it harder to recover MIAs as I've already shown you. Won't close the border (unless you actually believe his crapola). Supports KLA terrorists.

Good on taxes. Trillions for Global Warming. Billions in entitlements for illegals.

I agree with you that McCain has some terrible ideas. But as I said before, the rats positions are as bad or worse than his on each and every one of those issues. Tell me one issue where you prefer the rats position to McCain’s. I’ll bet you can’t name one. But I can name more than one major issue where McCain is preferable to the rats.

We’re in trouble either way, but we’re in significantly less trouble with McCain than we will be with Osamabama or Hillary. If you are willing to overlook your emotional reaction to McCain and think rationally, that will be clear.

Suppose you are driving your car and you find yourself headed for an unavoidable collision with the car in front of you. What do you do? Do you at least *try* to slow down as much as possible, or do you just say “screw it” and don’t bother even braking?

It's not an emotional reaction. I made my mind up on McCain years ago. In 2000 at least. Of course the Dems have nothing I can support. That was never a question. They aren't running in the only party I could support. Now McCain is and he is nearly as bad as they are and worse on some things. He just isn't acceptable to me. I can't support him regardless of the outcome. I think he will win myself. Without my vote. He will have to.

The only difference of importance I see, and has nothing to do with my decision not to vote for him, is that Republicans in Congress might fight liberal bills if the Pres is a Dem. If the Pres is a Pub the Pubbies in Congress will not oppose liberal bills. McCain will be called a conservative and the MSM will call anyone who opposes his liberal bills extremists and the countries idea of conservative will move a long way to the left. Real conservatives will be equated with Tim McVeighs.
