WASHINGTON -- Rolling Stone is backing Democratic Sen. Barack Obama for president, the first time the music magazine has endorsed a contender for the White House during the primary.
"The reason for the early choice is twofold," the editors explain in the publication's upcoming issue. "Undoing the damage of the disastrous Bush years will take a leader who can unite a deeply divided nation, and politicians with gifts like Obama's are so rare that it's imperative for each of us to do our part."
The magazine has endorsed presidential candidates since 1972, beginning with Democrat George McGovern. Other recent candidates include Democrats Bill Clinton, Al Gore and John Kerry.
"Obama has emerged by displaying precisely the kind of character and judgment we need in a president: renouncing the politics of fear, speaking frankly on the most pressing issues facing the country and sticking to his principles," wrote Jann Wenner, the magazine's editor and publisher.
Wenner called Obama's rival, Hillary Rodham Clinton, a "capable and personable senator," but criticized the way she has run her campaign.
"Her campaign certainly proved her experience didn't count for much: She was a bad manager and a bad strategist who naturally and easily engaged in the politics of distraction, trivialization and personal attack," Wenner wrote.
Obama appears on the magazine's cover next to the headline, "Barack Obama: A New Hope." In the image, his pose his Superman-like and an aura surrounds his frame. The issue hits newsstands Friday.
OMG O’Rourke is one of the greatest ever, right up there with Steyn and Lileks. In retrospect, it’s hard imagine him getting published in that fishwrap.
Toke up! Your savior the putz's putz has arrived.
Jann Wenner is also the pompous fame whore who has singlehandedly destroyed any credibility that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame might have had by taking over the board and using it to dole out honors to his hip pals instead of those who are truly deserving. This is the guy who overturned a vote in favor of inducting the Dave Clark Five so he could install rapper Grandmaster Flash instead. And we should listen to his opinions on who should be president?
When Rollingstone said they wanted the person who could unite the country they really meant they wanted most far-left person they could find. The only way they want to unite the country is under some quasi-Marxist form.
I get all my news from Tabitha Soren and Kurt Loader on MTV.
I will wait for their endorsements.
By the way, anyone in New Haven CT. The Zambonis and The Fleshtones are playing tonight at Cafe Nine. Do not miss this show. Could be the best live show EVER!
LOL!!! I'm holding off on my "endorsement" until a bunch of knuckleheads from the "media" show up in front of my house. I'm not holding my breath though.
DC5 get inducted finally into the Rock N Roll Hall of fame on March 10 on Vh1. I cannot wait, this will be a great thing to see Mike Smith get the honor while he is still alive (he is in bad shape with the paralysis from 2003).
Wenner will never let the Moody Blues, Yes, Jethro Tull, Grand Funk, or any of those ilk get into the Hall of Fame. He is a jerk, frankly, and the hall will be soon polluted with rappers and pop stars instead of real rockers. Madonna is now in the Hall...what is next, Britney in 2015?
I met Tabitha Soren in 1992 in Boston...pretty girl, really red hair...I also met Pauly Shore at the same event...that guy is a jerk, and unfunny to boot.
I think at one time, RS wanted to be a little more impartial. Now with hack writing foul mouthed punks like Matt Taibbi or whatever his name is, the paper is now a far left slick version of the Berkeley Barb.
I remember them being oh so relevant toward Edwards. My family bought me a lifetime membership so hell, I get free fish wrapper for the rest of my time on earth.
Every issue now is a crazy denouncement of Bush, or any of the Republican candidates, all written by that POS Matt Taibbi. He is a real punk, I wonder what is known about this angry bitter hack writing loser.
I have a lifetime subscription; I usually read the CD and DVD reviews and profiles of older artists, but it seems that the “interviews” are thinly veiled attempts to have the artist who is being interviewed, goaded into making an anti Bush statement.
Is that how to interview a person, by goading the subject to perform an agenda? They actually feed anti Bush statements to the interviewee, and the rock star goes on his pompous soapbox as if anyone cares.
Exactly! Their style of interviewing is juvenile and sophomoric. I mean, Rolling Stone claims to win journalism awards. I mean, Algore won the Noble Prize, so anything is possible, even with third rate rock mag journalism.
