BOSTON Researchers have uncovered a rare photograph of a young Helen Keller with her teacher Anne Sullivan, nearly 120 years after it was taken on Cape Cod..
The photograph, shot in July 1888 in Brewster, shows an 8-year-old Helen sitting outside in a light-colored dress, holding Sullivan's hand and cradling one of her beloved dolls.
Experts on Keller's life believe it could be the earliest photo of the two women together and the only one showing the blind and deaf child with a doll the first word Sullivan spelled for Keller after they met in 1887 according to the New England Historic Genealogical Society, which now has the photo.

They look as if they were picked to play the movie roles. Very beautiful.
Great picture.
Not sure I really want to see them together uncovered.
As a young soldier, my uncle was picked to meet Helen Keller. She read his face and said what a handsome young man he was. He often said that it was one of the hightlights of his life.
How does someone deaf, dumb and blind become a diehard Marxist? Was it Anne Sullivan or someone else who filled her with all of that?
Well, maybe she wasn’t dumb.
Great picture of one of the founders of the ACLU
look what it’s turned into
It’s amazing that someone missing their sight and hearing could learn to communicate. What an amount of dedication that took for Sullivan.
I promise I shall refrain from repeating any of the Helen Keller jokes I heard years ago.
Beautiful photograph. Thanks for posting this.
LOL!
I hear her brother was a pinball wizard.....
OK...tasteless, I know.
This is actually a very touching photo.
It portrays a very calm young lady and one can easily imagine her soaking up her world with the senses she has.
Okay, my wife took one look at this photo and declared it a fake. The head on the woman on the right, Anne Sullivan, was photo-shopped onto that image.
In this photo Patty Duke isn’t as cute as I remember her.
No offense to you intended, but I think she looks like a little brat in that picture. I can see where some real tantrums could break out from that girl!
read the article - doesn’t seem so
I remember this Helen Keller joke from kindergarten:
Q. Have you heard of the new Helen Keller doll?
A. Wind it up and it walks into walls.
In those days we were little barbarians, I’m afraid.
