Brazile: Howard Dean And Other Party Leaders Should Be Prepared To Step In By Greg Sargent - March 5, 2008, 9:22AM
Despite Hillary's big wins in Ohio and Texas last night, some super-delegates are already suggesting that a continued contest risks damaging the party and are calling on Howard Dean and other party leaders to be ready to intervene should the race get dirtier:
"Despite Obama's impressive victories in February, Clinton's comeback is based on sowing political seeds of doubt," said Donna Brazile, a Democratic strategist and one of nearly 800 party leaders known as superdelegates for their ability to determine the nomination. "In order to clinch the nomination, he must anticipate the worst attacks ever."...
Some superdelegates are bracing themselves to intervene on Obama's behalf if necessary.
"If these attacks are contrasts based on policy differences, there is no need to stop the race or halt the debate," Brazile said. "But, if this is more division, more diversion from the issues and more of the same politics of personal destruction, chairman Dean and other should be on standby."
Consider that a harbinger of what we're likely to hear from other super-delegates if the race gets uglier without significantly altering the underlying pledged-delegate imbalance between the two candidates.

And that will be an extremely tough ticket to beat.
________
Tough, but not insurmountable.
I have little doubt that her run last night resulted in a few soiled diapers.
Just like Ford’s momentum (after a prolonged primary fight) squished Carter? Just like Carter’s momentum (after a prolonged primary fight) squished Reagan? Just like Bush’s momentum (after a prolonged primary fight) squished Clinton?
You're thinking like a rational conservative.
A Clinton-Obama ticket will re-unite the Democratic party with enthusiasm and energy that they could not accomplish as singles.
We should have destroyed Hillary yesterday when we had the chance.
Limbaugh and the cross-overs are in for a big surprise, I fear.
Now, if the GOP had a good energetic supportable candidate (instead of McCain), your theory might work.
But McCain doesn't have the balls to fight.
Hillary will become the Democratic hero again when she selects Obama as VP... and conservatives will be crying for the next four years, and possibly eight.
I can't believe all this talk about a Clinton/Obama ticket. Why would Obama agree to be her VP?
“Hillary will become the Democratic hero again when she selects Obama as VP... and conservatives will be crying for the next four years, and possibly eight.”
If a Clinton-Obama ticket is elected in November, it will be 16 years into the abyss, and most likely, never a return. I’m 100% serious on this. If the Dems can sell, and Americans buy a Clinton-Obama ticket, that is a mandate for socialism. By the end of President Obama’s 2nd term, America will be just another 2nd tier socialist nation... very well aligned with the likes of France.
I know there tends to be a lot of hyperbole here, I use it myself, but I firmly believe that would be the result of electing a Clinton-Obama ticket. I’m also firmly convinced that almost 1/2 of America is ready for, and would embrace socialism, and ultimately communism.
Who better knows Hillary's true character.
That’s a pretty plausible prediction - I tend to agree.
It’s also a tacit admission that the party faithful - the voters - can’t be trusted with the decision to pick a credible candidate. Interesting.
I agree.
I dunno. I think she’d do just about anything for the nomination, and she can always marginalize him as she and Bill did to Al Gore.
Would Obama accept? Hmmm . . . I haven’t thought it through yet.
"Get your popcorn ready!"
I hope you’re wrong. I fear you’re right.
She might well be - showing how low the bar is over there.
Who will do the soundtrack? LOL!
LOL! Dems are prepared to short circuit the democratic process in their own party to gain power. Shows how much they value the institution.
Because they will see that as the only scenario which will keep together the two factions.
Obama might be ego driven, but he is NOT that irrational.
He will succumb to the massive pressure from the DNC and Kennedy and all the other Democratic powers-that-be.
After all is said and done, the Democrats desperately want to defeat the GOP more than they want to hold onto their petty differences....
Obama will swallow his pride in order to keep the Hillary faction from defecting to McCain. (plus, Obama will likely hold out hope that Hillary could be scandalized or impeached.... which would thrust HIM to the Presidency)
If he’s really an empty suit, it probably beats going back to the Senate and proving himself. But I’m not sure what to make of him at this point.
