Man Butchers 15-Month-Old Nephew in Jeddah Supermarket Samir Al-Saadi, Arab News

JEDDAH, 3 March 2008 — Early morning shoppers at a supermarket in Jeddah were left reeling yesterday, with some falling unconscious, after a well-built Syrian man clinched a knife and decapitated his 15-month-old nephew in front of his mother in the store’s fruit and vegetable section.

In a brutal murder that has shocked the city, the 25-year-old man beheaded the boy, who was out shopping with his mother — in full glare of shoppers and staff at Al-Marhaba supermarket on Sari Street around 9.30 a.m. The man, who is the boy’s maternal uncle, apparently killed the boy following a dispute with his sister and brother-in-law.

Eyewitnesses said that the man picked up a knife from inside the store and severed the boy’s head. The mother and a shopper standing close by fainted, while several other stood in shock and disbelief over what had happened.

A police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Arab News, “The murderer was in a dispute with the boy’s mother and her husband. He chopped off the boy’s head in front of the mother to get back at her.” He added that the mother has been left traumatized and is in hospital. The boy’s father was at work at the time of the incident.

Following the murder, police sealed off the supermarket while forensic experts gathered evidence. Ambulances were also called to the scene. The supermarket reopened for business at around 1.15 p.m. “It happened so quickly. Before people could intervene, the man had cut more than half way through the child’s neck,” said Abu Muhammad, a grandfather in his mid-60s.

A Saudi till attendant at a nearby cafe said, “One of my colleagues went to see what was going on and returned shivering. He saw the kid’s body and so we gave him the day off. He was in a bad state.”

An eyewitness, who lives in the neighborhood, said that the victim’s family lived close by and frequented the supermarket. “I’ve seen the murderer carrying the same child and playing with him on a number of occasions,” he added.

“No one could bear the gruesome sight of the boy’s decapitated body lying on the floor,” said Muneer, a Turkish car mechanic, who works at a garage close by. “How could someone do such a thing? I just can’t understand it... I still can’t believe it,” he said, shaking his head.

When the store reopened, employees were still in a state of shock. A guard, standing at the entrance, stood frozen and oblivious to the rush of shoppers. Pain and anguish were writ large on his face.

> lets hear the man talk.

Has anyone told him of this, and asked his opinion?

BTW, there's an interesting aspect of this to consider.

As an NRA member and supporter of the RKBA and 2A, I view crimes committed by deranged individuals in America using firearms as just that -- deranged individuals who happened to use firearms. I do not accept the "culture of gun violence" argument that says that availability and acceptance of guns contributes to their illegal misuse by lunatics. There is no "religion of guns" here.

We must be just as careful to view crimes committed by deranged individuals with knives in Islamic countries properly -- the individuals are clearly lunatics. So to what degree does their religion and "culture of knife violence" contribute to their insane, illegal behavior?

Personally I believe that because Islam encourages violence and intolerance, it must accept the responsibility for the actions of those deranged individuals who act in accordance with the Islamic writings. But we also must be careful about deranged individuals who read the gorier passages of the Old Testament and believe that such violence is justified there. Our own culture has seen much bloodshed over religion, mostly in the past.

But the Muslim religious culture continues to set new records for insane, intolerant, murderous behavior every day.

So to the point: Obama must speak to this BOTH as the action of a deranged individual, AND as the product of a deranged, violent religious culture.

i’m sure it has its defenders on the left.

Morally befuddled Liberal-left will call this "cultural relativism" and quickly change the subject to American atrocities in Abu Ghraib.

> remember....”all cultures are the same”

You forgot the the /sarc tag...

Modern Islamic culture is markedly more violent than anything that has gone on in America since its inception.

Old Europe had some crazy times, to be sure...

Read the papers! Listen to the news broadcasts! Entire families are butchered in this country - it’s on the news hour all too frequently and occurs across racial, religous and ethnic backgrounds.

I’m willing to bet you’re really a decent person who is so outraged by this incident you can’t help venting about it. Unfortunately you’re coming across as a bigot in this case. Blaming a whole religion for this incident is like blaming all Germans everywhere for the Holocaust. It is just plain wrong.

Discuss.

I’m of for bed.

This guy was flat out evil. The leaders of Al Queda condone the same evil tactics

That creature is a demon from hell. His just reward awaits him when he stands before God. There is NOTHING that we could do to him that would affect him because demons have no souls.

Everyone agrees a beheading is shockingly grotesque, but let’s stop pretending that we don’t live in an extremely violent society ourselves. I’m thankful every day to be living in Wyoming as I read the headlines elsewhere;

For the life of me, I’ll never understand why so many willingly pay the taxes they do to live & raise families in the various armpits of this country.

Put him in general population in one of his country’s worst prisons - that’ll “affect” him.

I had the same thoughts as soon as I hit the “Islamic family values on display here” type of posts — which I knew I was going to see.

These posts ignore the one bright spot here in this horrific story: Everyone who witnessed this event was shocked beyond words, to the point of falling unconscious. Their values seem to be in the right place, else they would not be shocked, no?

I said you’re coming across like one - I didn’t say you are one.

The fact that you’re outraged speaks well of you. This is the kind of event that should outrage all of us. But the guilty person here is the perpetrator of the grisly deed, not a religion, not a society, not a nation.

This incident has hit a nerve with a lot of people, and in this article the folks at the marketplace where the murder occurred were all horribly shocked and anything but complacent. If such a thing was acceptable in Islam they would have just shrugged it off and went on with their lives. That doesn’t seem to be the case here. I expect this man will be charged with murder and executed for his crime. I just wish such murderers in this country of ours would meet that punishment more often.

What say you?

Yes he will & he needs to lose his head. I hope slowly & painfully. However the Saudis are pretty good at beheading swiftly.

I say I am tired and in my estimation they are less tolerant than we.

Personally I have taken Jesus into my heart and believe in God in 3 persons, the father the son and the holy ghost.

Personally I believe that Gods hand is behind all that and there is really only one God and he allows is glory and grace.

I am monotheistic but understand grace.

The Arabs bother me in that they assign all power to Allah “Yet they speak for him” They need a reformation. a vetting of their religion.
