Venezuela and Ecuador sent troops to their borders with Colombia on Sunday after their Andean neighbor bombed Colombian rebels inside Ecuador in an attack Caracas said could spark a war.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez also deployed tanks to the frontier, mobilized warplanes and withdrew his diplomats from Bogota in the worst dispute in the unstable region for years.
Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa, a close ally of the leftist, anti-U.S. Chavez, expelled Colombia's ambassador and recalled his own envoy from Bogota in protest over what he said was an intentional violation of his nation's sovereignty.
Colombia responded to Correa by offering its apologies for the troops crossing the frontier, but said the operation on a jungle rebel camp was necessary because its forces came under fire from inside Ecuador.
But Colombia, a U.S. ally, also said it found documents at the camp that linked Correa to the guerrillas.

Hurricane Hugo about to be hit?
Obama said he was against the war in Iraq. Therefore, he must be qualified to deal with this.
I wonder what Sean Penn has to say about this. Maybe he’s advising his bud Hugo on foreign policy.
Naaaah...she'll just blame Bush.
Chavez is insane.

Ecuador is a country that managed to stay relatively peaceful with the Marxist terrorists in Peru on one side of them, & the drug lords in Colombia on the other. It’s too bad to see them descend into third world leftist thuggery along with Chavez.
Why do I have this feeling that the Columbian military could kick both Venezuela and Ecuador’s asses simultaneously with little difficulty?
I hope that is true.
But here is Commie Chavez’ chance for his built up military to expand his dictatorship/power into Columbia.
Will we help Columbia stand against Chavez NOW or will we wait til his power has expanded throughout South America and end up having to fight a much more powerful foe later....or face the Continent to our south becoming the property of our communist enemies (e.g. Putin) with nuclear missiles pointed our way from there.
The commie traitor Dems in Congress have been blocking efforts to help Columbia - economically...and will no doubt howl loudly and clearly against any military help President Bush might suggest we send to Columbia ....should Chavez’ thugs seem to be successfully invading Columbia.
I just wonder why Chavez has acted NOW and not waited until January 2009 when, am sure he believes, he will have his ALLY in the Ameirican Presidency - either Hitlery or Obama.
May President Bush have the strength and courage and act now and lead our troops to squash Chavez’ power move while we can.
Hugo is worried his cut from the drug trade will dry up.
It has been pretty clear Chavez has been itching for a fight.
He needs something to distract his slaves from the economic mess he’s creating. Shortages and hyper inflation... Always the result of a socialist tyrant in action.
Maybe this is an opportunity for us to take charge of the Venezuelan oilfields. We are always accused of “war for oil”, lets live up to it occasionally.
I’m trying to figure out where the 800 lb. gorilla is on this (Brazil).
We won’t do nothing...we’ll let Columbia and Brazil slice and dice hugo the dwarf.
