Transnistria asks int'l community for recognition as Europe's newest country

The people of Pridnestrovie (Transnistria), represented by a joint coalition of civil society NGOs and political parties, appealed to the international community for a chance to be heard. They want recognition of their country's nearly 18 years of 'de facto' independence. UN, OSCE and the Council of Europe are urged to not pursue a policy of double standards that will lead to failure and increased tension in the region.

TIRASPOL (Tiraspol Times) - In a mass meeting held in Tiraspol on Tuesday, civil society organizations from all over Pridnestrovie (also known as Transnistria, in Romanian) got together with eight of the unrecognized country's ten political parties to issue a joint statement to the international community, asking the world for recognition of Pridnestrovie's already-existing "de facto" independence.

The spark that set up this latest request was Kosovo, which unilaterally declared independence from Serbia twelve days ago. In the days that followed, the newly self-declared country received formal diplomatic recognition from just over twenty countries; representing more than ten percent of the world's nations. Civil society groups in Pridnestrovie argue that with nearly eighteen years of successful nationbuilding behind it, Pridnestrovie has developed its statehood far more than Kosovo and is therefore entitled under international law to the same rights and protections as any other legal entity in the international community.

Along with the majority of the political parties in Pridnestrovie, which are all overwhelmingly pro-independence, the NGOs prepared a joint statement urging three of the leading organizations in the international community to take the will of Pridnestrovie's people into account and recognize Pridnestrovie as Europe's newest country. The appeal for recognition has been sent to the United Nations, the Council of Europe and the OSCE.

Here's the full text of the statement:

Statement by the Coordination Council of Civil Society Organizations and Political Parties of the Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia Respublica

On 17 February, Kosovo wrote a new page in the history of current geopolitics. On this day, the international community was split in two on the basis of political self-interests. From the moment that individual countries recognized the independence of Kosovo, a new way of creating states under international law came into being. This is now a precedent for the recognition of the independence of other self-declared states.

The Republic of Pridnestrovie, created by the free will of its people, has the strongest case for recognition on this basis. The decision to establish Pridnestrovie's statehood was taken, implemented, and subsequently confirmed repeatedly in numerous nationwide referendums - recognized as the ultimate form of democratic self-expression in all civilized states based on the rule-of-law.

From the moment it was created, Pridnestrovie democratically established all the necessary government institutions and organs of authority, which act in full accordance with today's generally accepted democratic principles.

The rights and freedoms of the citizens of Pridnestrovie, as guaranteed by the Constitution of the Republic which was approved in 1995 in a nationwide referendum, correspond to all international standards. With regards to national, religious, ethnic-cultural, and linguistic tolerance, they even surpass the rights and freedoms granted to citizens of a number of internationally recognized states.

The independence of Pridnestrovie is further confirmed by the fact that even under the most difficult conditions, the economy of the republic continues to grow and modernize. The independence of Pridnestrovie is enshrined in all spheres of state and society - from the education system, the health system, security and policing, the legal system, the financial sector and our monetary system and the national communications sector.

A number of both historical and legal facts, such as the aggression and genocide by the Republic of Moldova against the population of Pridnestrovie, as per the ruling of the International Tribunal of 28 June 1993, combined with Moldova's ongoing political blockades, information blockades, transport blockades and economic blockades, have confirmed the desire of our people for independence.

Over the past 18 years, a new generation of citizens have been born in the Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia Respublica who consider themselves uniquely Pridnestrovians. They embody the identity of the Pridnestrovian people and their nation's sovereignty.

Attempts to deprive Pridnestrovie of its rightful sovereignty, by the application of a policy of double standards, will lead to failure and increased tension in the region. Only a de-jure recognition of the independence of the republic will contribute towards developing equal relations between PMR and the member countries of the international community.

We declare that the legal, ethnic, cultural, and historical factors of the proclamation of Pridnestrovie's statehood on 2 September 1990, and its further formation and state building development, are ample grounds for the international recognition of the Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia Respublica.

I suspect Russians in Transnistria, which used to be a Romanian province before 1940 and which was Romanian again from 1941-44. Its a part of Moldova and Moldova's population is ethnic Romanian.

Pridnestrovie Transnistria

You need to pick one name, and you need to be a little more catchy and pronounceable.

Call it "Ralph". Or "Roger".

Who couldn't support independence for Roger?

But Pridnestrovie Transnistria has a bit of a PR problem.

I saw a “No Reservations” episode about Romania. It was like America before interstate highways (I remamber my dad would stop at the snake farm, or to watch a smoking chimpanzee, or, best of all, a chicken play piano.) Anthony Bourdain looked like he wanted to kill somebody.
It was smoking chimpanzees as far as the eye could see.

Following the Kosovo precedent, any region of a country in which an ethnic minority is a majority can petition for self-determination. Why stop just with Kosovo? The Russians in Transnistria are making the same case for independence from the Moldovans.

Can FReepers create their own country? All domiciles could be called embassy’s. We would than ask for financial UN aid. Our National food can be kielbasa & horseradish. With beer. Lot’s of beer. All citizens would have diplomatic immunity for anything. Just have to come up with a name now....

It gets better. From Wikipedia:

It is known in English as Transnistria (which is also the name of the region in Romanian), Trans-Dniester[10] or Transdniestria[11]. Its formal long name is its name in Russian Pridnestróvskaia Moldávskaia Respública (Moldovan: Република Молдовеняскэ Нистрянэ, Russian: Приднестровская Молдавская Республика, Ukrainian: Придністровська Молдавська Республіка, ПМР, English: Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic), as used by the breakaway Transnistrian authorities. This is abbreviated PMR. The short form of this name is Pridnestrovie (transliteration of the Russian "Приднестровье").

Etymologically, all the names come down to similar spelling variants of Transnistria, meaning "beyond the river Dniester", or Pridnestrovie, meaning "by the river Dniester".

ConservadoNation? We'd all have to move to a state that's economically viable and cede and declare independence. If you can declare nationhood for ethnic reasons, why can't you declare it on ideological grounds? The Left should see multiculturalism can be taken in the other direction as well.

hmmm...I’d like to have my own country here in FL...I wonder if I could set up a banana republic without actually growing any bananas. I could apply for a whole bunch of foreign aid from the US and so I wouldn’t need to tax myself at all...Of course, I would join NAFTA and all trade between my country and the USA would be duty-free. I could even provide housing for some of the poor poor pitiful poor of the US...

Moldovan is now spelled with the Latin rather than the Cyrillic alphabet. Old Romanian used to be written in Cyrillic but since the 19th Century, the modern language, like the other Romance languages, is written in the Latin alphabet.

I visited Romania and Bulgaria last summer. Romania, like you say, uses the Latin alphabet and is understandable and sometimes you can translate things. Bulgaria still uses Cyrillic and the signs and media might as well be written in Chinese characters they’re that unreadable.

Yes, we need to form a coaliton of sane, taxpaying, Christian, conservative, responsible citzens.

You remember that red/blue map? The blue areas are already “occupied” by the insane godless liberal irresponsible PC loons.

So let’s grant them thei own coutry by proclaiming our own AND let them pay thier own taxes, run their own gubmints and affairs...you know like downtown Detroit, New Orleans, Philly, etc. ALREADY do, let’s just make it official and stop their cancerous spread and leeching off the rest of us!

I’ve already seen Jesusland. There’s red states.

But yes, we need a catchy name...”Land of the free home of the sane”?

They have a hammer and sickle on their flag and their coat of arms. As far as I’m concerned that disqualifies them forever from having independence.
