Obama's mom: Not just a girl from Kansas
Chicago Tribune ^ | March 27, 2007 | Tim Jones

Chip Wall can't help but zero in on the little stuff whenever he watches Barack Obama on TV.

It's his old pal Stanley.

For Wall and a few dozen others, Obama on the campaign trail often brings to mind Stanley Ann Dunham, Obama's mother and a strong-willed, unconventional member of the Mercer Island High School graduating class of 1960.

"She was not a standard-issue girl of her times...

"She touted herself as an atheist, and it was something she'd read about and could argue,"

the only child was a ... daughter of a father who wanted a boy so badly that he named her Stanley -- after himself.

Stanley Ann Dunham's formative years, spent not on the Great Plains but more than 1,800 miles away on a small island in the Pacific Northwest.

Stanley Dunham died in 1992, and the Obama campaign declined to make Madelyn Dunham, 84, available.

In 1955, the chairman of the Mercer Island school board, John Stenhouse, testified before the House Un-American Activities Subcommittee that he had been a member of the Communist Party.

The marriage failed. Stanley Ann filed for divorce in 1964 and remarried two years later, when her son was 5. The senior Obama finished his work at Harvard and returned to Kenya, where he hoped to realize his big dreams of taking a place in the Kenyan government.

Years later, Abercrombie and another grad school friend looked up their old pal during a trip through Africa.

At that point, the senior Obama was a bitter man, according to the congressman, feeling that he had been denied due opportunities to influence the running of his country. "He was drinking too much; his frustration was apparent," .

To Abercrombie's surprise, Obama never asked about his ex-wife or his son.

That right there should scare the heck out of all the Obama defenders in this thread.

Whatever. Just saying, just because he looks happy in one fraction of a second in his life means nothing.

Its documented that his mother was a Marxist athiest. Its not too far of a stretch to say that he probably learned it from her. Just sayin’.

I’d rather not. I like to remain anyonamous on the internet. If you don’t believe it, then thats ok. But I’m sure we all have seen countless photos of children who looked happy when we knew they weren’t. Besides he was a baby there. Most babies don’t think a whole lot about their lives. As long as they are comfortable and around people they know, they don’t think much deeper than that. It would be later on when he was old enough to know his life wasn’t normal when the damage would be done. I’d say he had a problem of wondering who he was and where he belonged. He had no roots so to speak. This had to have an affect on him.

Neil Abercrombie, a Democratic congressman from Hawaii who was part of those regular gatherings.

I can't imagine voting for anyone who looks like this:

But part of the fun of living in the 1950s must have been doing "exciting" things like hanging out with foreigners listening to jazz and discussing existentialism. It might all have gone bad later, but I can't fault someone for sampling what was available at the time.

One of my ancestors was reputed to be a horse thief...Abilene, Kansas...1880-1885. Even if that meant that I am a horse thief today...automatically...and, presumably Obama to be a crypto-radical Islamo-Fascist terrorist...it wouldn't change my preference of Obama over Hitlery Clinton as the Dem nominee.

Do you find it at all odd that in less than 4 years the US military was able to completely overwhelm & bring to the Surrender Table BOTH Hitler's Third Reich, in Europe, and the Empire of Japan, throughout all the Pacific Ocean, but to track down & neutralize this frappy-headed band of crypto-radical Islamo-Fascist terrorists, to make the world safe at last, could easily take 100 years or more, at the current rate of roughly $9 BILLION per month?

If your parents had been part of a carjacking ring, wouldn’t it be unsurprising if people wanted you to condemn carjacking before running for President?

More likely, it would be presumed that your hopelessly conflicted loyalties to family and denunciations of crime in general would disqualify you from any public trust.

Joe Kennedy was into bootlegging...didn't stop JFK, Robert or Ted...haven't heard any condemnations so far. Actually, I've heard very little about that (just to name the first example that comes to mind, research would probably yield others).

More likely, it would be presumed that your hopelessly conflicted loyalties to family and denunciations of crime in general would disqualify you from any public trust.

See above...and I would welcome some such denunciation from Hitlery about Slick Willie, but somehow think that I listen in vain...

Lots of time 'til November. All I'm saying is that I prefer Obama to Hitlery as the Dem nominee. And if all goes well, I should be celbrating very soon...

Cheers!

You’re post is so good it must be repeated.

Yeah. It should be analyzed. For example, i thought i detected shades of Nash, Cummings, and a bit of Haiku.

It means everything and nothing.

Mostly nothing, though...nothing new, at least.

The allied armies weren't encumbered by political correctness, multiculturism and the United Nations.

If Joe Kennedy’s rumoured bootlegging could have been proven at the time it was a crime, it indeed might have prevented the Kennedy dynasty.

And if my grandmother had wheels, she’d have been a wagon.

So whom do we nuke, and what do we do if Al Qaeda doesn’t surrender immediately thereafter?
