Catholic Group Hits McCain Endorsement

Republican presidential candidate John McCain has been accused by the Catholic League of embracing a “bigot” — Texas evangelical leader John Hagee.

McCain said on Wednesday that he was “very honored” to win the endorsement of pro-Israel Hagee, who heads a 19,000-member church in San Antonio.

Catholic League President Bill Donohue said in a statement: “There are plenty of staunch evangelical leaders who are pro-Israel, but are not anti-Catholic. John Hagee is not one of them.

“Indeed, for the past few decades he has waged an unrelenting war against the Catholic Church. For example, he likes calling it ‘The Great Whore,’ an ‘apostate church,’ the ‘anti-Christ,’ and a ‘false cult system…

“In Hagee’s latest book, ‘Jerusalem Countdown,’ he calls Hitler a Catholic who murdered Jews while the Catholic Church did nothing…

“For the record, Hitler persecuted the Catholic Church and was automatically excommunicated in 1931 — two years before he assumed power — when he acted as best man at Joseph Goebbels’ Protestant wedding…

“As for doing nothing about the Holocaust … Israeli diplomat Pinchas Lapide credited the Catholic Church with saving 860,000 Jews. No religion can match that.”

Hagee is best known for his writings on the Middle East, where he envisions a blood-soaked clash between East and West leading to the return of Jesus Christ.

Hagee has written that events in the Middle East point to an imminent apocalypse Christians should welcome.

McCain said that he was not familiar with Hagee's writings.

Donohue declared: “Senator Obama has repudiated the endorsement of Louis Farrakhan, another bigot. McCain should follow suit and retract his embrace of Hagee.”

You got hold of an official copy of the McCain playbook:)

Yeah, it's readily available at the RNC site. The Tennessee GOP received their advanced copy this morning.

Does he get a pass because he’s a “Christian”?

No, he's getting a pass because he's supporting the GOP's anointed boy. It certainly has nothing to do with McCain's love for evangelicals, since he doesn't have any.

Catholics need to stop supporting the illegal invasion before they have any moral credibility.

It’s sedition in my book.

Who would have thought that Catholics were the big owners of companies making money hiring the illegals.

Don’t misunderstand me. Maybe that didn’t come out right. I am just curious how McCain deals with this.

Simple. Give Donahue's complaint the respect and attention it deserves. Nothing easier.

Well, speaking as a Catholic woman, McCain didn’t want my vote anyway, so I seriously doubt this makes much of a difference to some of us.
How many of us remains to be seen, I guess.

He is a typical televangelist whose sermons are full of condemnation, bombastic melodrama, and OVERSIZED EGO.

Agreed. I loathe those money-grubbing Pharisees. The more loudly they condemn everyone else, the more likely they are to be depraved, despicable perverts themselves.

Well, when we were fighting over the Mormon/Baptist Schism, some of us pointed out that there was an equally large rift to be had between Evangelicals and Catholics.

We ALL need to get back into the POLITICAL realm, and stop thinking that politics is a good place to fight our religious differences. We need the support of conservative Jews, Catholics, Evangelicals, Mormons, and even Muslims.

If we break into 5 camps, and each insists on their own leader, we will never win another election beyond the county level.

The “company” is called the collection plate at the church.

That’s the cynical reason.

Anti-Catholicism is tolerated by the GOP more than antisemitism.

Which is really sad, considering the debt they owe to Bill Buckley, God rest his soul.

Is it sedition for companies to hire illegals? Or are just Catholics guilty of sedition?

Speaking as a devout practicing Catholic, I love the Church and will stand by Her through hard times, of which we’ve seen a lot lately, but remember, the illegal immigration is being supported by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. No Vatican pronouncements on this have been issued backed by the Pope. There is nothing in the Catholic Canon or doctrine that supports their stance. As a matter of fact, the Catholic Catechism speaks against it. I realize most people believe that Bishops speak for the Church and in many ways they do, but us Catholics have a right to disagree on any non-doctrinal matters, and this is one. So, to generalize and say “The Catholic Church” is a big statement that should be carefully researched before pronouncement.

Amen. The Catholic Church has about 1.6 BILLION members. Statistical odds with a church that size are priests/members are going to wander off the plantation on a regular basis. Theses people do not represent the church.

The Bible, the church (Vatican, the Pope), my bishop and priests are very clear that we as Catholics must OBEY THE LAWS of our country, state, county, etc. This includes obeying immigration laws. Any Catholic who behaves otherwise is violating the Gospel and the teachings of the church.

Not having had TV for more than twenty years now, I don’t know who Hagee is, but I do think McCain should apologize for anything offensive Hagee has ever said, and make sure Hagee knows to keep a civil tongue in the future.
