Huckabee to McCain: Debate Me
Fox News ^ | February 27, 2008 | Fin Gomez

Mike Huckabee, campaigning in Ohio yesterday, formally asked GOP rival John McCain for a two-man debate...

[snip]

McCain, the presumptive nominee, had said earlier in the day that his campaign had never heard from Huckabee about a debate, despite the fact that Huckabee had been making the request publicly since Mitt Romney dropped out.

In a recent ARG Texas poll, McCain is leading Huckabee only by a few points: McCain 45, Huckabee 41. Senior staffers tell FOX that while the ARG poll can differ wildly at times, the crowds for Huckabee have been considerably bigger than the crowds for McCain; a sign, they say, that Huckabee is gaining formidable ground in the Lone Star state.

Huckabee has said repeatedly that he will challenge McCain until the GOP convention in Minnesota, despite their good relations...

Congressman Duncan Hunter's endorsement of Governor Huckabee
is helping to bring defense and border conservatives on board:

"I got to know Governor Huckabee well on the campaign trail," said Hunter...
"Mike Huckabee is a man of outstanding character and integrity."

Huckabee letter to McCain:
The Honorable John McCain
John McCain 2008
P.O. Box 16118
Arlington, VA 22215

Dear Senator McCain:

It's been my pleasure sharing the stage with you this past year, as we have worked to promote our ideas to lead this country. I have the deepest respect for you as a person, politician, and an American hero – and I appreciate the way you have run such an issue-based, positive campaign.

Now that the race for the Republican nomination is down to just the two of us, I believe this is the time for a real discussion about our vision for the future of this great country. I encourage you to join me in a Lincoln Douglas-style debate so that voters can better understand our views on critical issues such as health care, education, energy independence, terrorism and national security.

Our Democratic counterparts, Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, have had recent opportunities to underscore the differences in their positions. It seems only fitting to me that Republican primary voters are offered the same.

I look forward to working with your staff to schedule this as soon as possible. I would suggest we set the debate before the March Fourth Primaries. It is my hope that one of the TV networks would offer to sponsor such an event.

Senator, let's lead by example and get the ball rolling. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this idea and debating you in front of the American people.

Sincerely,

Mike Huckabee
Former Governor of Arkansas (1996-2007)

Huckabee. What an idiot.

McCain is going to be the nominee. Huckabee will never be the nominee. Even if under the craziest tin-foil-hat-wearing so-retarted-you-call-Romney-a-Conservative type of thinking, if McCain somehow does not get the nomination, it would never go to Huckabee.

Why on earth would McCain debate a nobody? It can ONLY hurt and ONLY hurt the party. Its just stupid.

Huckabee seriously needs to go home. He’s sad and desparately soaking up the spotlight at this point.

Jeez Huckabee, have some class?

McCain needs a true conservative as a Veep if he intends to break 35% in the general election come November.

I'm looking for miracle, just like Huck and hope McCain simply self destructs before the convention.

John McCain conservative Republican RINO.

After my little hiatus, I'm disappointed to come back and see this chap leading.

The current FR poll question made my head spin.

Hey now, let’s face it, McCain is still quite a bit more conservative than President Bush.
They agree on most issues, domestic, and foreign policy issues, as well as Global Warming™.
And McCain is actually more conservative than Bush on inmigración.
But when it comes to government expansion and spending, there is no contest. McCain is far more conservative than Bush has ever been.
For example, McCain voted against Bush’s Medicare Prescription Drug benefit.

Counterpunch I appreciate many of the things you have pointed out. Particularly that transparent transfer of obligation from business to the taxpayer known as the Prescription drug “benefit”.

Neither man is conservative. Both, to their credit are unafraid to go to war when necessary. Sadly, both would leave our southern flank exposed while we are at war.

Both seem more commited to mexicos poor than our own but that is really a slant towards giving the chamber of commerce anything it wants. I'm for legal immigration from across the globe.I'm for removing incentives that allow folks to sit on their dead a$$es while others support them.

One thing I would point out on “immigration”, although he is no worse than President Bush in this regard, if enacted the McCain / Kennedy amnesty would be the largest earmark in history. A massive tax burden on the US. taxpayers most of whom are dead set against any kind of amnesty in the first place.

I noticed McCain going around the issue of border security again just today

Regards

McCain used you Mr. Huckabee to knock out his opponents and you played along. He doesn’t need you anymore. You are not a contender, just a nuisuance. You will not catch fire like Obama. It is over for you and thanks to you, the presidential race is pretty much over for us conservatives. We are concentrating on the local, state and Congressional races. Get over yourself.

“Huckabee seriously needs to go home. He’s sad and desperately soaking up the spotlight at this point.

Whether it’s the air in Arkansas, something in the drinking water, or a mysterious contagion in the Governor’s mansion in Little Rock, SOMETHING apparently is compelling Huckabee to behave in the exact same manner as another ex-governor of Arkansas (whose proclivity to hog the spotlight and lack of class are legendary...)

With many going over to vote for Obama to beat Hillary, Huck might win this. I’m voting for the Huck here in Mississippi Tuesday, as McCain has done nothing to earn this conservative vote.

There is a basic litmus test that true Christians must apply to the candidates. Concerning those issues Huckabee shines.

While logical/analytical minded people will look at different aspects, with Christians they must first apply the litmus test, before they can even think about whether a candidate is say fiscally conservative.

To find one candidate that narrowly passes the litmus test, is very difficult, this time Huckabee did. Now, he is not ideal, but he's the best we have got out there!

Things like stem cell research, abortion, in vitro fertilization embryonic discards, gay & lesbian marriages, etc; which you might think are minor issues, stab a knife right through a Christian's heart.

I'm certain that you have tried to understand Muslims why don't you extend the same courtesy Christians.
