Hmmmm.....here's a post from another board (SpeedTV) that surmises a performance advantage on this loose-lid stuff.

"The lid was still on the oil tank. The tank sits in an enclosure that has a bolt on lid on it. The "box" is open at the bottom and if the lid is off, air from beneath the car evacuates out the top of the box and creates lower pressure under the car ... more downforce."
