Obama's 'Patriot' Act
WSJ Online ^ | 27 feb 08

No, we're not talking about Barack Obama's opposition to the post-9/11 antiterror law. We're referring to the Senator's support for something called the Patriot Employer Act, which deserves more attention as an indicator of his economic agenda.

Along with Democratic co-sponsors Sherrod Brown and Dick Durbin, Mr. Obama introduced the bill in the Senate in August 2007. Recently in Janesville, Wis., he repeated his intention to make it a priority as President: "We will end the tax breaks for companies who ship our jobs overseas, and we will give those breaks to companies who create good jobs with decent wages right here in America."

Mr. Obama's proposal would designate certain companies as "patriot employers" and favor them over other, presumably not so patriotic, businesses.

The legislation takes four pages to define "patriotic" companies as those that: "pay at least 60 percent of each employee's health care premiums"; have a position of "neutrality in employee [union] organizing drives"; "maintain or increase the number of full-time workers in the United States relative to the number of full-time workers outside of the United States"; pay a salary to each employee "not less than an amount equal to the federal poverty level"; and provide a pension plan.

In Obama’s world some people (companies) will be more equal than others.

Sounds fascist to me: define compliance with economic mandates from the state as ‘patriotism’. Straight out of Mussolini, FDR and Hitler’s playbook.

Four pages; that will be size of the special tax form companies will be required to fill out to prove they are "patriotic"... that an a nice fat check to the DNC, of course.

On a related note, he had nothing to say about improving the tax liability faced by US companies, by adopting the Fair Tax, for example...

So....what’s a company to do? Well, you disolve your US corporation, terminate ALL US employees and move corporate headquarters and production to a tax friendly, non-union country.

Nobody buys that this idiot is patriotic. He won’t salute the flag, won’t put his hand over his heart, and won’t wear a flag on his lapel. Is he signaling Castro and Chavez?

First, let me apologize on behalf of all the sensible people in the state of Ohio for the likes of Sherrod Brown. He’s a democrat simpleton who votes for every anti-war/cut and run/pro-illegal alien proposal that comes down the pike. You’ve no idea how many times I’ve e-mailed him and the other Ohio democratic Senators and Representatives to let them know that there’s at least one citizen who isn’t a member of the liberal Union brainwashed masses.

Newsflash, Obama-yer-mama: One of the main reasons businesses outsource is the lack of tax breaks and other incentives for companies to STAY here.

Gawd, what an idiot.

I’ve had the intuition that the American left was fascist long before Goldberg’s masterful exposition (which I’ve only read excerpts from).

In college, when some friends and I organized the only political organization on our campus, The Dickinson College Tory Club (we were also all anglophiles), our stock reply to the easily bandied accusation of being ‘fascists’ was “Fascists?! Nothing of the kind, fascists are nasty progressive types, make trains run on time things of that sort.”

I’ve always refered to WPA art deco architecture (which I actually like, although the earlier versions of art deco were better) as ‘American fascist architecture’.

And I had an exchange of letters with Christina Hoff Sommers in the mid 1980’s in which my main point was that the Western left in its ‘multiculturalist’ and ‘feminist’ versions is more indebted to Nietzsche than to Marx.

Unlike communism, which Hayek and vonMises showed was unworkable even before it was fully implemented in the Soviet Union, fascism is a viable social system—the ChiComs, despite keeping the name are no longer communists, but fascists. Because it is workable, it is more of a threat to liberty. On the other hand, the case of Spain shows that fascism can undo itself, albeit only over the course of more than a generation.

It was your idea, so, you should ask JimRob and the Mods to start an “Obama TruthFile”.

Things like this should be in it! Good idea BTW.

Senator Obama’s “Patriot Corporation Act” has stirred concern that it bears too many similarities to Fascism. Under the bill, businesses that follow government prescribed standards on wages, prices, and production would get tax advantages and preferences on government contracts.

Obama called these concerns “overblown.” “When people see the word ‘Fascist’ they tend to think ‘Hitler,’” Obama said. “They should be thinking Mussolini. Before he made the mistake of joining Hitler in his disastrous war, Mussolini had a very successful program of government-business collaboration. This is the model for my bill.”

“Let me remind you, President Roosevelt was a great admirer of Mussolini,” Obama pointed out. “Il Duce brought order and prosperity to a country ravaged by depression. That is all I’m trying to do with my bill and will be trying to do as president.”
