Here is the actual boy, though.

Don't know if mom "spiked" his hair with gel before school or not.

Plenty of soldiers I know wear those things.
If it’s within the regulation for the Army, why would the school complain?... oh... I think I just answered my question....

I wouldn’t have a problem with the haircut in the photo.

She must have. It's pretty long -looks like it can be spiked about 1-1/2" up with gel.
That being said, I'm so glad I have full custody of my Sons. They ask me if they can grow their hair long like Daddy's. I tell them, "No. Little boys don't have long hair. You can grow yours when you grow a beard and moustashe, but not now."
My hair is down to my beltline, and my Cherokee/Apache blood won't let me grow much facial hair.

That doesn’t look any different than a Marines “High & Tight” to me except there’s bangs.

Don't know if mom "spiked" his hair with gel before school or not. That thing looks like an over-grown high-and-tight. The high-and-tight, of course, is the ugliest hairstyle in history, and it's given to Marines to make them even less attractive to women.
So much sturm-undt-drang over such a tiny issue clearly indicates something else is going on behind the scenes. Methinks the school was looking to boot the kid for other reasons, and this was the "technicality" on which they pinned him.

He’s a cute kid in spite of the hair. It does him no favors.

Remember the story not too long ago about the little black kid that got sent home because his hair was too short?
