The 77-year-old former James Bond actor, who lives in the Bahamas, says Scotland is "within touching distance" of achieving independence.
Writing for the Scottish Sunday Express, Sir Sean praises the work of the SNP government which gained power in the devolved parliament last year.
He has been the SNP's most high-profile supporter, donating thousands to funds.
Sir Sean, who was born in Edinburgh, has previously sworn not to return to the country until it is independent.
In the article, Sir Sean praises Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond and the work of the SNP government since it came into power in May 2007.
Sir Sean writes: "I've always been hopeful about Scotland's prospects. And I now believe more than ever that Scotland is within touching distance of achieving independence and equality."
The first step towards achieving this was winning Scotland right to a separate parliament in 1997 and the second was electing an SNP Government last year, the actor says.
"I believe we have what it takes to take the third step, and I am convinced it will happen in my lifetime."
In the article, Sir Sean also hails Scotland for securing its own parliament for the first time since the "parcel of rogues" sold its freedom in 1707.

One of the Irish Tenor, but he is actually born and bred Scot.
Good point. And Scotland is not only heavily welfare-dependent, the birth-rate has collapsed and the population is rapidly shrinking.
One wonders exactly what Scotland would gain from independence. Other than independence, that is...
It is funny isn’t it?

Maybe pursue the Laborites’ dream of a socialist utopia?
We tried that 150 years ago.....
Look at Canada for example.
They ‘claim” that they are independent, yet when you take the oath of citizenship: you have to swear an oath to AND actually say ‘QUEEN OF CANADA” and the picture is of Queen Elizabeth.
How do I know this? I’m originally from Canada.
Scotland has the oil in the North Sea.
That will make them a member of OPEC.
England will then have a negative trade balance with Scotland, and Scotland will be able to buy arms from North Korea.
After that, the game will get interesting. . .
Very insightful, Condor.
Will the amount of oil be a prereq. to join OPEC?
“Will the amount of oil be a prereq. to join OPEC?”
Don’t know.
But I’m sure Scotland will be a more reliable source than Venezuela under Chavez.
And I’m sure that China will come courting for oil contracts, too; and maybe exploration rights.
(Scotland and China as allies?)
I agree.
Then more success to Scotland then. On a buss relationship with the US, even enemies with all their bravado like Chavez realize deep down that business is business and that politics just get in the way of profits.
Was wondering where I might go, if either of the democrat/socialists got elected. Would Scotland be a good choice?
My grandfather was a good Scot, from the isle of Skye. Maybe it is time to go back? I know why he left, with the clearances and all...
Ya think? Is it about time?
It is likely based on economics. Like it or not we live in a consumer society. Sean Connery, whose male line is directly from Wexford,Ireland, would no doubt wish to consult his accountant. Mr Connery has not been too keen to pay them to Bonnie Scotland for many years. He is not stupid in these matters.
A few conservative Canadians did want to see Quebec separate. This would finally end the extortion over the years. A survey found that many Quebecers still believed they would be able to use a Canadian dollar. They believed the tens of thousands of federal civil servants would still have Canadian jobs. Federal jobs are an industry in it's self in Quebec.
I had the view at the time, that if Quebec separated and the economy failed badly ie: groceries rose by 25% and unemployment doubled, things would happen.
The separatist leaders would run for their lives.
They will almost certainly plunge to the economic status of, say, a Belgium and have about as much influence on the affairs of Europe, the EP notwithstanding.
Aye, Peter, we are of the same Clan - Donachaidh - you bein’ a Duncan and all!
