Connery: Scots independence close
BBC ^ | 24 February 2008

Posted on 02/24/2008 7:08:31 PM PST by Clintonfatigued

The 77-year-old former James Bond actor, who lives in the Bahamas, says Scotland is "within touching distance" of achieving independence.

Writing for the Scottish Sunday Express, Sir Sean praises the work of the SNP government which gained power in the devolved parliament last year.

He has been the SNP's most high-profile supporter, donating thousands to funds.

Sir Sean, who was born in Edinburgh, has previously sworn not to return to the country until it is independent.

In the article, Sir Sean praises Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond and the work of the SNP government since it came into power in May 2007.

Sir Sean writes: "I've always been hopeful about Scotland's prospects. And I now believe more than ever that Scotland is within touching distance of achieving independence and equality."

The first step towards achieving this was winning Scotland right to a separate parliament in 1997 and the second was electing an SNP Government last year, the actor says.

"I believe we have what it takes to take the third step, and I am convinced it will happen in my lifetime."

In the article, Sir Sean also hails Scotland for securing its own parliament for the first time since the "parcel of rogues" sold its freedom in 1707.

Those figures arent definite, but Scotland would receive a sizeable chunk of NS oil if we went independent.

Why would the tribes secede? As it stands right now they get all the benefits of the US, but are “sovereign nations”.

"Sovereign nations?" To quote John Wayne, "Not hardly." They operate without some restrictions imposed by the federal government on the States, but with many other restrictions that highlight the simple fact that they are not true "sovereign nations"...

” That was a great film “

I had to watch it last night after posting about it here .
Marvelous acting all around , and has been said a superb soundtrack by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits fame . Wouldn’t have been as good a flick without the “ stars “ angle , though .

“Most Holy Father and Lord, we know and from the chronicles and books of the ancients we find that among other famous nations our own, the Scots, has been graced with widespread renown. They journeyed from Greater Scythia by way of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Pillars of Hercules, and dwelt for a long course of time in Spain among the most savage tribes, but nowhere could they be subdued by any race, however barbarous. Thence they came, twelve hundred years after the people of Israel crossed the Red Sea, to their home in the west where they still live today. The Britons they first drove out, the Picts they utterly destroyed...”

Wa say ye? They annihilated an indigenous race o’ nude, painted equestrian warriors? Och, the shame of it. Ah sha’na wear a kilt again, or me name is nae Sean Connery.

GREAT page, potlatch!
I love the graphics, and the music.

Connery is the best Bond ever.
Though, I like the new guy, too...even better than #2, Roger Moore.

“Not anti-gun.

Connery remember is ex-service and has of course used and handled guns therefore and knows what damage they can do.

Pro-gun responsibility Id say rather than anti-gun.”

I disagree; Connery did a voiceover in an ad for either Snowdrop or GCN urging the govt to ban .22 pistols in addition to the fullbore weapons (which they eventually did). So we have the totally pathetic situation (lets face it - in line with a lot of things)where British olympians have to train abroad in order to compete for their own country when in it. As to damage, these pistols given their large size & low power would be better off used as a club.

Fair enough.

I wasnt aware of said ad and am a bit disappointed that he lent his voice to such a kneejerk campaign.

I could have stomached the handgun/automatic weapon ban, bu the pistol ban was just stupid.

The Scots I met were a fun group of folks that worked hard and played hard. Aside from the currency and architecture it really wasn’t all that foreign of a country to me.

My travels to the Middle East are another story...

Cheers,

Mike

Interesting.

While libs in the USA seek a one-world government, the rest of the world is seeking to separate.

Also, as the separations continue, it looks as though the rebuilt Roman empire that Bible teachers have been talking about are becoming a possibility, with the old borders restored.

Thanks for the link. Apparently, Scotland’s reliance on subsidies is overstated.

The slums of Glasgow might be the worst place in the UK, and have a long history of electing far-left MPs. The only question is whether their influence is really that significant, although I think Scotland may have disproportionate representation in Parliament.
