Michelle Obama's senior year thesis at Princeton University, obtained from the campaign by Politico, shows a document written by a young woman grappling with a society in which a black Princeton alumnus might only be allowed to remain "on the periphery." Read the full thesis here: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4.
"My experiences at Princeton have made me far more aware of my 'blackness' than ever before," the future Mrs. Obama wrote in her thesis introduction. "I have found that at Princeton, no matter how liberal and open-minded some of my white professors and classmates try to be toward me, I sometimes feel like a visitor on campus; as if I really don't belong. Regardless of the circumstances underwhich I interact with whites at Princeton, it often seems as if, to them, I will always be black first and a student second."
The thesis, titled "Princeton-Educated Blacks and the Black Community" and written under her maiden name, Michelle LaVaughn Robinson, in 1985, has been the subject of much conjecture on the blogosphere and elsewhere in recent weeks, as it has been "temporarily withdrawn" from Princeton's library until after this year's presidential election in November. Some of the material has been written about previously, however, including a story last year in the Newark Star Ledger.
Obama writes that the path she chose by attending Princeton would likely lead to her "further integration and/or assimilation into a white cultural and social structure that will only allow me to remain on the periphery of society; never becoming a full participant."

probably because that is how you see yourself and how you present yourself to others. To wit: your thesis.
Michelle Obama hasnt said one thing about the US before the year 2007 that would make her proud to be a citizen of the greatest nation in the history of mankind that has placed her amongst the most privliged of the elite in this country.
I never thought that I would see a spouse of a presidential candidate who was more of a radical, narcissistic, arrogant, hubristic, self-entitled, and maddening solipsist than Hilary Clinton. To the nations dismay, I think we have found her. But in the liberal Hyde Park ghetto that she lives in in Chicago, attending cocktail parties with her coterie of liberal U of C academics, Black South Side DemonRat pols, public sector sinecures, NGO flacks and liberal Sun Times columnists, EVERBODY she knows thinks and feels this way.
“Interesting a liberal, rich, majority white school would increase her race apartheid rather than blurring the lines as such schools claim to do.”
I get her discomfort completely! The elitists at Ivy League schools only pretend to be tolerant and it must be evident to an African-American student. They are a bunch of frauds.
I wonder why we got Michelle’s thesis so fast but it was so difficult to get Hillary’s. Hmmmmm
Never saw so much of the first person in an academic paper.
Oh well. She was a sociology major.
Only if the man is keeping you down.
Now Michelle is proud of her country for a second time, I suppose.
Hey Travis.
If she thought Princeton was racist then lord amighty she must think the rest of us are pretty much Nat Turner’s worst nightmare
It galls me how these folks who have done so well...much better than many of us in a land of opportunity and still they whine incessantly.
I thought a burgeoning black middle class (same argument folks make about illegals) was supposed to be different and more conservative.
Hell, they just whine louder
Yeah, get it out of the way quickly, up front, it’ll go away by election time.
I will say now that I hardly care about what the presidential candidate wrote as a college student, unless he is espousing the same notions today.
The college writings of the “1st lady”? It looks petty even asking — and we just gave the Obama campaign a coup by insisting it was important, because now they freely offered the paper, so we look childish and petty.
I don’t know much about the political game, and it scares me how little some others who are supposed to understand the game seem to understand it sometimes.
This is very much like Hillary making a deal out of what Obama said in a primary school paper about wanting to be President (which in my opinion was the beginning of the end of her campaign, although it wasn’t seen that way at the time).
I believe they were stolen by a crazy yippie shrink ...not voluntarily released upon request
This is college level work?
What I meant to say: ‘Guilty white people go to Princeton!” No wonder she was uncomfortable. Should have hung out with us regular white people.
Bump
I agree that Obama will get burned in the bright light.
He ignites the far left which is nowadays the Democrat base but the middle will wonder about his radical ideas.
“Stokely Carmichael and Charles Hamilton’s (1967) developed definitions of separationism in their discussion of “Black Power” which guided me in the formulation and use of this concept in the study.”
Interesting page....
Michelle, spare us the Princeton Victim Syndrome drama!
Thesis? or Diatribe?
I can’t think of a single college professor who wouldn’t have knocked me out of my chair for such rambling drivel.
Did I write Pentagon Papers?
I meant Zig Zag Papers.
