Woman, 23, likely to be charged in Cottonwood bus crash today

MARSHALL, MINN. - The 23-year-old woman whose van collided with a school bus was arrested Thursday afternoon and booked on suspicion of criminal vehicular operation in connection with the crash that killed four children near Cottonwood, Minn.

Alianiss Morales, of Minneota, Minn., is expected to be charged and make her first court appearance this morning, said Lyon County Attorney Rick Maes.

The Minnesota State Patrol's investigation of the crash continued Thursday, and Maes said much of the paperwork from the investigation was already on his desk.

"One [part of the investigation] is whether she was operating the vehicle in a grossly negligent manner," Maes said.

"So we need to look at what exactly witnesses identified at that particular intersection."

Maes would not elaborate on Morales' actions that led to the arrest, and declined to say whether she was speeding. Other charges are possible, but it is unlikely that other drivers involved will be charged, Maes said.

The driver of the pickup truck involved in the crash said that the van driven by Morales hit the side of the school bus at the intersection of Minnesota Hwy. 23 and County Road 24 near Cottonwood on Tuesday afternoon.

The bus skidded on its side into the pickup truck driven by James Hancock, 47, of Marshall, who is hospitalized with a broken leg, a broken hand and other injuries.

The children who died were Jesse Javens, 13, and Hunter Javens, 9, both of Cottonwood; Reed Stevens, 12, of Marshall; and Emilee Olson, 9, of Cottonwood. They were among 28 students on the bus. In addition to Hancock, eight children remained hospitalized in Sioux Falls, S.D., Marshall and Rochester.

Reactions to Morales' arrest were mixed at a prayer service Thursday.

Where's my hijack?

This thread is not about school bus safety.

It is not about any aspect of schools or schooling.

This thread is about an illegal criminal that killed four precious children.

WHY AREN’T THERE SEATBELTS ON BUSES!?

Let me ask you this question -- respectfully, since you have the bus driving experience -- is it possible to enforce the use of seatbelts?

I’m one of those posters who is glad that metmom pinged us for an update. It is a courtesy.

And in your world there is no way to control what kind of BS is in the ping.

You seem unaware that homeschoolers might actually care about the deaths of children. This is a continuation of a previous post on the same accident from the day before. It is a courtesy to the previous posters of that thread. You wish to remain hostile, OK. Don’t bother to understand that a bunch of mom might wish to discuss the various facts, speculations and concerns of the nexus of children and buses.

And it is not like if there is any BS, people will hash it out on the thread. Pings in and of themselves are not BS.

You really seem to have a problem with the ping, are you on that ping list? Probably not. Your anger is out of place.

Morales worked at the Jenny-O turkey plant in Willmar for three months ending in January

My brother is a truck driver who picks up loads there often. Says it's all illegals working there.

We need to organize huge demonstrations at these kinds of places and get the attention of ICE.

I had posted that same sediment on a similar thread about this accident, yesterday.

I hope the town people will do so going straight from the church to the plant. That owner has no business hiring people illegally, that action brought about the tragic end to the lives of these four young children. Those families will never be the same. The privatized profit from not having Americans in their plant should be taken from them and given to the families of these children. Period.

You are the one with an agenda.
You refuse to comprehend the caring of others.

Sorry, I still think the “ping” is in poor taste.
But, no hard feelings.

I just have to ask, did you want the poster to change the name of her ping list just for this thread?

Because that is what those who are offended are asking. That she specifically change the name for THIS thread.

Are you asking for a name change, so that those of us who are on the list would not know what list we were being pinged to (I am on MANY ping lists) or did you not want us not to be pinged?

I’m not really sure which form of censorship you are asking for.

whoa, back up lady! I never asked for censorship!
I just thought it seemed insensitive, and I still think so.
Maybe we should just drop it now.

Wow.

>>I never asked for censorship!<<

Well what do you think it is called when you ask that a bunch of us not be pinged to a thread that we are interested in?

The list is called the “Another Reason to Homeschool” list. If we are pinged, that is what you will see. SO either we get censored by not being pinged or the name of the ping list is censored off so as not to offend anyone, who is actually not even being pinged by the list holder.

Which one would you like? Personally, I think either choice is insensitive to my needs. Is your offense any bigger than mine? More important? If so why?

I think it would be polite for you to answer before it is dropped. For future pings, that is.

BECAUSE it was in poor taste, okay?

now why don’t you drop it?
Or must you have the last word?!

Man! Grow up!

I’m sorry, which was in poor taste?

That the “Another Reason to Homeschool” ping list was pinged to this thread or that it’s called that.

It’s not a matter of “growing up”. I’m 47 and grew up a long time ago. It’s a matter of clarifying which part of the post you find to be in poor taste. So that Metmom and everyone on her ping list as well as everyone else here who was so offended that the list was pinged to the thread knows next time how not to offend all of you. Trying to be polite here.

If you want to call that having the last word, that’s your right. Personally, I call it clarifying your personal stance.

And BTW, I’m NetmilsMOM. I’m not a man.
