BELGRADE, Serbia - Serb rioters broke into the U.S. Embassy Thursday and set fire to an office after a massive protest against Kosovo's independence that drew an estimated 150,000 people.
Masked attackers broke into the building, which has been closed this week, and tried to throw furniture from an office. A blaze broke out inside one of the offices and parts of the facade also caught fire.
Authorities drove armored jeeps down the street and fired tear gas to clear the crowd. The protesters dispersed into side streets where they continued clashing with authorities.
The neighboring Croatian Embassy also was attacked by the same group of protesters.
In Washington, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack strongly urged the Serbian government to protect the U.S. Embassy. He said the U.S. ambassador was at his home and was in contact with U.S. officials.
More than a dozen nations have recognized Kosovo's declaration of independence on Sunday, including the United States, Britain, France and Germany.
But the declaration by Kosovo's ethnic Albanian leadership has been rejected by Serbia's government and the ethnic Serbians who populate northern Kosovo. Russia, China and numerous other nations have also condemned the declaration, saying it sets a precedent that separatist groups around the world will seek to emulate.
Kosovo, which is 90 percent ethnic Albanian, has not been under Belgrade's control since 1999, when NATO launched airstrikes to halt a Serbian crackdown on ethnic Albanian separatists. A U.N. mission has governed Kosovo since, with more than 16,000 NATO troops and KFOR, a multiethnic force, policing the province.
But Serbia — and Kosovo's Serbs, who make up less than 10 percent of Kosovo's population — refuse to give up Kosovo, a territory considered the ancient cradle of Serbs' state and religion.
Earlier Thursday, police estimated that about 150,000 people had attended a rally in the Serbian capital. The crowd waved Serbian flags and carried signs reading "Stop USA terror." One group set fire to a red-and-black Albanian flag.

You appear to be ignorant of the fact that clinton was working with the Iranians to supply arms to the Islamists in Bosnia. It was of great benefit to al-Qa'ida.

You are the one who claimed that Serbia didn’t exist before 1912. As pointed out above, it existed since the Serbs moved into the Roman province of Upper Moesia, which included the territory now called Kosovo in the seventh century and established a state that had a central government and borders. That was before there was a state called Albania. The Albanian tribes were part of the Illyrian people at the time and did not occupy what is now Kosovo.
What is now Albania was a part of the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, the Ottoman Empire, and Greece. It was a group of ethnic tribes that warred among themselves rather than a state such as Serbia or Bulgaria. It wasn’t until 1246 that Albania became a state called the Albanian Kingdom, a country that only lasted until 1336, and never included present day Kosovo.
You may not know it, but the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, and the Ottoman Empire, no longer exist. Serbia occupies territory that once was part of the Roman Empire, and was occupied by the Ottoman Empire and by Osmanli, but since those countries no longer exists and Serbia is still there, the land is Serbian. You can’t claim they are occupying Roman Empire or Ottoman Empire or Osmanli territory. You would have to say that Albania is occupying their territory too since they were part of those long gone countries too.
Just because Serbia was occupied by Ottoman Turks and later by Osmanli does not mean it stopped existing. The Serbs fought these occupations and became free again in 1878 a situation recognized by the countries of the world and formalized by the Treaty of Berlin.
Like Norway, Serbia did not cease to exist just because it was occupied by a foreign power. Like the Norwegians, the Serbs resisted the occupation and won back their independence.
There was never a treaty recognized by the majority of countries I the world that recognized Norway as part of the Third Reich.
Some countries that are occupied do indeed cease to exist. Serbia never did. Countries like Courland, Livonia, Navarra, Navarra, Burgundy, Savoy, Lusatia, Pomerania, Mecklenburg, Silesia, Bohemia, Wallachia, Podolia, Bavaria, to name a few.
It is no more justifiable to bomb France and force them to recognize an independent Burgundy, or bomb the hell out of Germany and make them recognize an independent, Bavaria, or for France to bomb the U.S. and make us recognize an independent state made up of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, than for the U.S. to bomb the hell out of Serbia, invade them and make them give up Kosovo.
If some country tried that here, you might think it a fine thing to do. I’d be more militant than the Serbs are.

The Clinton Administration has chosen to ignore weapons shipments from Iran to the Muslim-led Bosnian Government that in the last year have added considerably to Bosnia's military firepower, American officials said today. They said the United States has ample evidence of the Iranian deliveries, which are in violation of the United Nations embargo that bans arms shipments to all combatants in the Bosnian civil war. But they said the Administration had not tried in any way to cut off the flow. Finally, the book Unholy Terror by John R. Schindler—professor of strategy at the Naval War College and former National Security Agency analyst and counterintelligence officer goes into much greater detail of the Islamist and clinton.

Schindler exposes how Osama bin Laden exploited the Bosnian conflict for his own ends and the disturbing level of support the U.S. government gave to the Bosnian mujahidin—just as had been done with the Afghan mujahidin. Repeating the mistakes of Afghanistan contributed to blowback of epic proportions: Khalid Sheikh Muhammad (the mastermind of 9/11) and two of the 9/11 hijacker pilots were veterans of the Bosnian jihad.

I don’t know the answer. Hopefully, with Sarkozy in France and Merkel in Germany, the situation will improve. I understand America’s position as moral and military watchdog of the world, but it is an extremely difficult and heavy load which we cannot continue to carry alone, imho.

While long-held tradition does call an attack on an embassy a "casis belli", or act of war, our own unwillingness in the past to enforce this makes anyattempt to enforce it for this particular attack both ludicrous, and bigoted. We allowed our embassy in Teheran to be not only attacked, but completely taken over in 1979, and allowed similar acts of war to be suffered even more recently by long standing ally, and charter NATO member Denmark, in the "Cartoon Jihad". So, your point is?
