'Independent' Kosovo: A threat, not a country
http://www.hellenicnews.com/readnews.html?newsid=8104&lang=US ^

By James George Jatras

Abraham Lincoln was fond of asking the rhetorical question: "If you call a tail a leg, how many legs does a dog have? Five? No, calling a tail a leg don't make it a leg."

That pretty much sums up the recent unilateral declaration of independence by Albanian Muslims in the Serbian province of Kosovo. Several countries, disgracefully led by the United States, have recognized Kosovo. Major media have hailed creation of the "world's newest country." But calling Kosovo a country doesn't make it one.

Serbia has denounced the move as the illegal creation of a "separatist entity" on its sovereign territory and has handed down criminal indictments against several of the top Albanian Muslim leaders. Now under way is a sharp global competition to see which governments will recognize Kosovo and which will not. Under heavy pressure from the U.S. State Department, most European countries will meekly comply. Some, like Cyprus with its Turkish-occupied north and Spain with its Basque separatist movement, will not.

In short, an action State Department bureaucrats touted as "settling Kosovo's status" has resulted in anything but. Outside of Europe, the picture is even fuzzier. Russia will reject Kosovo's independence, and expected to take the same line are China, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, South Africa, Brazil and many others. Russia will veto any effort to extend Kosovo membership in the United Nations.

Any sovereign state with restive ethnic or religious minorities would recognize Kosovo at its own peril. What Washington seeks to inflict on Serbia today could be the fate of the American southwest tomorrow. Israel, in particular, is closely pondering its next move.

From a purely strategic point of view, this would seem to provide nations incentive to kill or exile minority populations to ensure against national dismemberment.

Israel, in particular, is closely pondering its next move.

There's a certain irony here, in that for years Israel has been trying to get Middle East countries to recognize it, and complained loudly about the non-recognitions; now that's it's her turn to recognize a country, Israel refuses.

When Kosovo can defend its own territory against the Serbian claim, it will have the right to call itself a nation. Until then, it’s just a piece of conquered land, a little Muslim terrorist colony and NATO protectorate.

Israel hasn't forgotten the Holocaust in which the ancestors of these mediaeval heathens wholeheartedly participated. The last Jew was forced out of Pristina in 2001.

Kosovo will never be a member of any int'l organization; it will never be a viable entity. It is stillborn; a failed state. As long as there is a single Serb, the fight for their ancient province will go on. Blowing up illegal border crossings and beating up KFOR generals is just the beginning. The international fascists have crossed the line they should not have crossed.

That's because the "independent country of Kosova" is a Bastard creation, as you should well know!

So, following your logic ... since Iraq and Afghanistan are currently unable to defend themselves without Allied help, they shouldn't be viewed as real nations?

Considering that Kosovo was forcefully separated from Serbia regardless of what Serbia thought of the matter. Also, considering that recognition of Kosovo will set a precedence for the future in regards to their own country...

...it would be foolish for Israel to recognize Kosovo, for that recognition would then be used by the Palestinians, Western Europe, and the UN to unilaterally create an independent ‘Palestine’ within whatever borders they wish.

Pretty much. If it depends on another nation for protection it is a vassal state and not an independent nation.
