This was the plan all along. Build him up, get the nomination, then destroy him for either Obama or Hillary. They were NEVER going to support a Republican. He could choose Thompson as his VP, resign under pressure from the "scandal" and then turn his delegates over to Thompson. Thompson could choose Rice as his VP and Thompson/Rice could then run against Obama/Edwards.

We can dream, can’t we? But I would have Thompson choose Romney as his VP to take on Obama/?.
