On the merits of an affair, likely. On the issue of politcal and legal interactions with the woman in question, perhaps not.

This may get ugly.

This was pointed out to me someone else. I’m not a supporter of McCain, so take this for what it’s worth, I don’t believe the affair is going to turn out to be the most serious issue associated with ths.

From the Times UK:

February 21, 2008
John McCain forced to deny romantic link with lobbyist

************************EXCERPT***********************

The timing of the allegations comes as Mr McCain had begun to build bridges with his party's conservative base and as the Republican establishment have rallied behind him in anticipation of a general election fight against either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama.

The potentially most damaging allegations contained in the article centre on Mr McCain's reported conflicts of interests in the areas of political funding and lobbying. He has built a reputation as a scourge of the excesses of both but is accused of several instances of hypocrisy.

I think you are absolutely right. The “affair” part was not what raised the hair on the back of my neck, either. The implications of consorting that closely with a lobbyist, any lobbyist, is a deal killer. One only need remember “Abramoff”-—for Republicans anyway.
